Title: Headlight bulbs
Post by Tons_of_fun on Nov 17th, 2007, 11:44am
Hi all.I will be shortly replacing my headlights for new ones (Thanks matt) & would just like someone to confirm that both dipped & main beam lamps are both H1 fitment ,with the side lights being 501,s ? Also i would like to swap the main beam bulbs for some of these "super" bulbs (xenon).Has anyone tried these before ? & do they actually work? Are they likley to put any strain on the wiring (55w).I,ve been looking at the Ring super white xenon bulbs which claim to be up to 60% brighter but still only use 55w to power them !! As always any advice is appreciated.thanks ...Craig :)

Here is a possible answer to your question, certainly looking at these myself...

Yes they are H1 and side lights  are 501  have them fitted to my 2.9 12v, The light is a bit brighter but i wouldnt say 60%, but definetly whiter than normal halogen bulbs which tends to make things stand out a bit more. They dont put any extra strain on the electrics. I got mine from e-bay but unfortunatley i cant remember the name of the company .

50%  brighter !

Yeah right,  the number of times I've fell for that old dodge and found out the new bulbs are  of  little  difference. :-X

 50%  my  arsenal .

Why they don't get done for advertising  misrepresentation is a mystery.

As for them  Blue ones ............................Grrrr.

I bought a full set on ebay (Osram's) about 12months ago and swapped one side only first - for comparison. They are definately brighter. Don't buy the type with a blue filter intended to make them look like HID lamps.

I was so pleased with them I bought a full set for the bike from the same seller. They have exactly the same wattage rating as the originals, so absolutely no risk of damage to wiring etc..

Beware of the cheapo H1 Xenon bulbs for sale on Ebay....they are slightly brighter, but not by alot & they don't last very long.

I bought some & they only lasted a couple of months. I now use 'Ring' bulbs (£3.00 each from local garage) & they are just as good as the cheapo Xenon bulbs & last alot longer  :)

I put the 8000k HID kit on mine last year and I have to say it does make a big difference at night. I also got some LED sidelight bulbs just to complete the effect. I was thinking of putting a HID kit on the main beam and fog lights too!!

I only really want a bit more from my main beam,so i,ve been reading up on Phillips vision plus bulbs. They apparently give on average a 30mtr extention to your main beam  :o.I would hope that from a company like phillips those claims are genuine...Especially at £27 a pair  :o :o

hi there

before spending that emount of money, you'd be better of cleaning the headlights completely.

take them off the car... just 3 bolts (1 you get to through the foglight hole. take the glass lens off and clean with hot soapy water or a dishwasher. using a SOFT DRY cloth, give the reflector a dusting (gently).

this makes a big difference overall.

The bulbs will be going into new lamps which will be having a full strip & clean due to being pulled apart & given the "loden" facelift treatment  :) :).Overall the dipped beam is fine ,but i think there is a bit of room for improvement on the main beam side of things. Thanks for the advice.....Craig :)

Halfords some times do bogof. I have there super brilliance and they are an improvment. After we have fitted HIDs to my sons car I expect I will want them on the scorp.

I have been using 100Watt bulbs in mine for over 3 years now and not had any problem.
Never had any mention on the MOTs and the pattern shining forward is absolutely perfect.
Looking at the brightness of some of the new cars lights I don't think mine are any brighter but they are better the the "Candle 55W" Standard bulbs.
If you do the maths on the power volts and current, the power wires even on the Scorpio is good enough!
55 w require 4.5 amps and the 100 W require 8.3 amps.
I would be surprised if even the old crappy non heat resistant wiring that they used on the early Scorpios was rated at lower than 8 on the power wires to the lights.
