Title: Starting & performance
Post by Tons_of_fun on Dec 4th, 2007, 8:02pm
Every now & then usually after a short run, when i come to re start the car i sometimes have to crank for 10-20 seconds & give the gas pedal a little prod to start the engine. It dosent seem to be performing as well as it could either.I dont really feel much difference between half & full throttle & when excellerating hard from standstill it,s a bit flat.At first i thought it could be the cats so replaced them but it,s not really any better.Im going to bung in some injector cleaner & give it a real good run on sunday (no doubt at stupid mph! ) ::).Just wondering if anyone might point me in another direction. If it was a 16v i would be cleaning the maf, because thats the sort of symptoms im getting  ???.Oh yes ...It,s a 12valve.Thanks in advance.....Craig :)

fuel filter?? air leak in fuel pipe?

sounds like fuel starvation

Non starting when warm can also be due to a faulty fuel rail pressure regulator  ;)

Thanks chaps.I changed the fuel filter when i last serviced it 2000 miles ago,& i dont think it could be the fuel line.Fuel pressure regulator is a possibility, but i have now noticed the tempreture gauge has developed a mind of it,s own.It goes up & down when it wants!Usually reading cold when driving & normal when at standstill. So i think the thermostat /sender unit is on the way out.Could it be giving a false reading to the ecu causing the performance loss (overfuelling a warm engine)? Fuel consumption isnt too bad.16-19 mpg around town (depending if im late for work ;)) &28-32 on a run ,between 60 & 75 mph.

I had the wondering temperature gauge problem on my 2.9 12v. I finally tracked it down to a poor connection the engine multi-plug - this is the large square block with lots of cables going into it, on the drivers side inner wing (left when looking under the bonnet), down at the bottom.

Undo the bolt on top, which pushes the plug and socket apart and pulls them together as you tighten it up again. Work it a few times to clear any oxidation from the contacts and it might just fix the gauge problem. As all of the engine signals pass through it, it might just also fix your starting problems.

The job only takes a couple of minutes to complete and costs nothing.
