Title: How much should I pay?
Post by mijfife on Dec 5th, 2007, 10:58am
Hi all,
I'm still on the hunt for an Ultima 2.5TD estate but just wondered roughly what money I would expect to pay for a decent one? Parkers show a '97P with 90K miles as being £1390 from a dealer, and £1275 private good, does this sound about right ?

Cheers Jim

I would aim for less than a grand for a good one look for few owners and ford service history for the early part of it's life at least.
watch as many as you can on ebay,
don't buy one you can't see.
check prices in the auto trader online and be willing to travel if poss.
be prapaired to walk away from a bad one or stretch your budget for a 'minter'
print off the buying checklist from this great site and check every thing on it.
have you rulled out an lpg cossie or 12 v ?
best of luck

Thanks for that Dan, I didn't realise these cars were so cheap!! It's a hell of a lot of car for a few quid  ;)
My last three cars have been LPG but my nearest garages are quite expensive for it and my nearest Asda is 15 miles away. I'm thinking diesel so that I can run on waste veg oil - much much cheaper and without the hassle of the lpg tank taking up valuable boot space. The VM engine is very good on veg and will happily run 100% veg in summer and thinned slightly in winter.
I'm happy to travel for the right car, living in Scotland I'm well used to everything I'm interested being the wrong side of Birmingham  :( I've already had a look at the excellent buyers guide and will certainly take it with me once I find a car to look at!

Cheers Jim

As the old saying goes you get what you pay for.I,ve seen some absolute dogs for £1500 & some little crackers for £700.I,ve even been offered £2000 for mine  ;D .The advice dan gave is sound & if you search hard enough you will find what your looking for.It took me months to find mine & i still had to put in over 70 hrs of bodywork (scuffs /chips etc) to get it to where it is today.Keep searching m8.They are out there.

Well worth taking the time to find the right one and possibly paying a premium for a really good car with no issues. Took me about 6 months to find my 2.3 Ultima estate but it was worth the effort  ;D

I'm hoping I don't have to wait too long on something coming up as I do get a bit impatient and the money is burning a hole in my pocket  ;D My '89 Volvo 760 GLE (on lpg) goes in for it's mot next Monday so providing it passes, I should have a bit of time on my hands. (Slight play in the steering rack but I'll hopefully get away with it) I bought the Volvo as a stop gap while I sold my Rav4, just didn't like that at all, and it's convinced me that I'm much happier in big comfy cars for my everyday work horse. My other cars are a bit different tho.... a '67 Singer Chamois Coupe and a '63 Imp based kit called a BS Nymph  8) great fun but both tucked up nice and warm in the garage for the winter!
Anyway, I've just spotted a 1996 Ultima TD on Autotrader website but it's listed as 389 miles away  :( That put's it below London but I might give it a phone for more info.
Cheers Jim

They are out there Jim :)

I picked up my TD Ultima Estate in Bonnybridge for £150 and although it needed welding in the common rear suspension spot it is in perfect condition ;)

They are very good value, I'm now on my fourth (or is it fifth?) Granada - Scorpio. All had been well looked after prior to my purchase of them, I kept them straight during my care  - they just kept on going until I needed a change and ready for the next newer one.

My present Scorp is the smallest amount of money I've ever paid for Granada or Scorp and it has proven (so far) to be the best of the lot - that is apart from its fuel consumption (2.9 12v).

They certainly beat an equivalent small car which has been thrashed and not perhaps so well looked after.

Hi Highlander, sounds like you got a good deal there! I'm fairly self sufficient with welding, mechanics, spraying etc so something like that would do me nicely, although my budget would allow for a nice well sorted example, the less I spend the better. (It's called being Scottish & a Fifer at that  ::))
You will let me know if you hear of any this side of the border, from what I've heard you've already got a few so it's my turn  ;D ;)

Cheers Jim

Yep, saw that one on ebay,, very nice and in a great colour. I thought it was a tad expensive and unfortunately it will have the later engine which isn't indirect injection so not as WVO friendly  :( The other one is only a Ghia and I'm hoping to hold out for an Ultima  :)

Cheers Jim
