Title: Singing Engine
Post by Tons_of_fun on Dec 11th, 2007, 1:30pm
The last 2 mornings when i start the engine from cold,i get what can only be described as a high pitched singing from the engine! At first i thought it might be a drive belt slipping but it isnt quite the same noise. The noise speeds up with increased revs & dissapears after about 30 sec,s to 1 minute.Water pump maybe,or a dry bearing ?Dosent make this noise when engine is warm. All suggestions appreciated. Thanks ...Craig :)

Havent used the aircon yet (trying to save fuel) but now you come to mention it the bearings have been rumbeling for a while. It,s hard to pinpoint exactly where it,s coming from. With the bonnet up the sound seems to be coming from everywhere  :oTrouble is i cant take it to a garage because by the time im onto the main rd the noise has stopped.Just hope it,s not going to be expensive as my range rover has thrown a conrod through the block,& cant take the expense at the moment  :'( :'( :'(

Craig, On start up spray some WD40 on each pulley in turn, As soon as the noise stops then that is probably the one ;)

Ah yes .Rich you are the voice of sence in a motorhead concert (if that exists) ;D ;D.Im just frightened to death it,s the waterpump or something similar as the rangie is going to have to be scrapped & this is my only other means of transport (apart from the wifes escort) but im not going there  ::).What with the council threatining to fine me if i work on any vehicles outside of my garage,it,s becoming a worry  :-/

Doers it have Climate control Craig?
if it has the aircon will come on as default on start up although the light wont show its on.
Start it, switch the aircon off and on till you put the light on then switch it off hopefully while its still making the noise and see if it makes any difference

Make sure the air flow control is NOT on the windscreen setting because the air con is on when its in this position ven though the light is NOT illuminated .

put the control onto floor or face vents ( far left )

Thanks for the advice chaps.I actually removed the A/C belt before starting & the noise is still there.A quick squirt of WD40 didnt make any difference, but have now located the noise to the water pump  :'( :'(.Best quote i,ve had so far is £150 supply & fit  :'( :'(.Am going to leave it with a mechanic this week so he can start it from cold & confirm my suspitions.Looks like mastercard will be picking up the bill for this one  :'( :'( :'(

Seems a lot to me for a 12V pump Craig :-/
Sod the council and do it yourself on the drive.

Rich i,d love to,but if my idiot of a neighbour see,s me & gets on the phone ,that will be another £80 fine  :'(.The pump is £75 & he is also replacing the drive belt £11,thermostat £8 & the sender unit (im supplying). So he,s only charging me £50 labour, which i think isnt too bad. There isnt as much room on the scorpios compared to the granadas. It loks like the radiator may have to come out if he cant get the pulley off in situ  ::)

It doesn't sound that bad when he is doing all that, but I would still do it myself for the enjoyment ;)
Has your neighbour got nothing better to do, some people eh, I bet they are one of these do gooders that are turning this country on it's head too.

Quite the opposite Rich.He is a 33 y/o drug taking alcoholic, who has given me 3 years & 4 days of grief. He has no job & sits at home all day making my familys life a misery.I,ve tried all sorts to make ammends with him,but it always ends with me punching him.He is already been served with an asbo for causing a public nusence of himself & is hated by everyone. He lives with his parents though ,who know he is a nightmare but defend him to the hilt. The reason im constantly bombarded by the council is because they think it,s me complaining about them,so i suppose they think it,s payback. He,s already said he thinks im a w****r because i have 3 cars &1 motorbike (all parked within my boundry,so as not to cause any obstruction to others) .It,s just sour grapes m8,but its annoying when the council call me to say they have had complaints from "a neighbour" who says it,s like living by a car lot  ::) ::)

Ok,the cars home with lots of new shiny parts.Came to £152.70 which i suppose isnt too bad. That included all the mentioned work plus a reverse flush & fresh anti freeze  ;D.Made me smile though when he said it,s the best scorpio he,s ever seen  ;D ;D ;D.Probably wants my custom again  ::).Oh well next up is road tax & MOT in january.Lets keep my fingers crossed for that one eh!!! :-/
