Title: Heater Air Locks
Post by yangi on Dec 28th, 2007, 6:20pm
Hiya

Looking to try and get to root of 'yet another' Cossie Heater problem!

Heater was working fine until the summer when a hose split. Obviously lost most of the water but sorted it out.  Didn't notice lack of heat until winter set in.  Just had new water pump and thermostat fitted (seperate issue), but still heater is lacking in....... heat!

I think it could be airlocked and gonna tackle it tomorrow - got my clear pipe ready!

But when JohnnyCab says (see below) he removed the small pipe from the expansion tank, does he mean one of the two small return pipes, or the overflow pipe?  I would assume one of the return pipes - but we all know about assumption  ::)

Any advice pls

"Before refilling the system, I pulled off the small pipe on the expansion tank & pushed a three foot length of TRANSPARENT tubing into it up to about six inches. I then gaffa taped the other end to the under-bonnet so the top was two & half feet above the expansion tank (a couple of feet would probably be ok, it was just that this was the length I had). Next I re-filled the cooling system up to the max mark on the tank. I then started the engine (expansion cap off, but not sure it really matters)".

On the cossie I think there are two pipes going to the expasion/ reserviour tank,
On the 2.3 used by Johnny there is only one ... I personally would suggest you use the LOWER of the two and clamp the other one off . BUT others might know more than me on this one . ( Ussually the case )

Not sure about the cossie, but as long as it's a return hose that runs from a high point in the system (top rad pipe) to the cap on the expansion tank then it will suffice.

Running the car with the rad cap off & facing up hill should expell most air, but creating this higher point will assure all air is expelled, as it creates a much higher point of gravity.....& we all know that air will always rise to the highest point  ;)

Hope this helps  :)

Hi Ren

Got the Stat a while ago - September/October time - from Lifestyle Ford in Horsham.  It was about 50 quid  :o  Along with a new water pump at 125!  Wasn't a problem getting either at the time.

Thanks JC
Forgot yours was 2.3 version  ::)

Did the 3 foot tube, got fair amount of air out - but made little or b****r all difference to the heat coming through the vents  ???

Guess next job is a thorough flush through (with some Coca Cola.... other soft drinks are available  ;D ) and see if that makes any difference.

If not its either bite the bullet and fit new heater or suffer with luke warm  :-/

Cheers all

Hi ren, regarding the boiling over. Assuming that the HG is fine & water pump is working okay & the rest of the cooling system is free from blockages, then the matrix must be well & truely blocked  :(

How hot is the matrix out pipe when the engine is warm ?  :)
