Title: smoke coming from engine bay
Post by v4-max aka Cheekyboy1 on Jan 4th, 2008, 9:56pm
not mine fortunately. have been offered cheap (450 quid) its very tidy on  a m plate 24v cosworth granada scorpio, not sure if it is a boa or bob, does not have the plastic cover on, has cosworth decals on both cam covers. runs ok but is burning oil, i dont think it is oil dripping on to exhaust cant see it anyway, but smoke coming up on both sides of engine with strong oil smell. any suggestions?

Sounds like a Granada BOA

Cam cover gaskets leaking is a possibility.

Dont discount leaking exhaust manifold gaskets/ downpipe joints.Quite common on the granada boa set up.

smoke appears to be coming from both sides of engine, is this likely?

It has been known. My m8 had a capri with similar symptoms (smoke from both sides of the engine) Turned out for some reason both exhaust manifolds had been removed & put back minus the gaskets  :o.Check rocker gaskets first (run your finger around the sealing edge (on a COLD engine) and feel for any oil.If cossie covers are anything like 12v covers you can never get them to seal 100% for too long anyway. ;)

I had these symptoms years ago on another car and it turned out to be the crankshaft oil seal was worn out allowing oil to dribble out and drip onto the combined central down pipe of the exhaust hence loss of oil, and smoke from both sides.
