Title: Droning/rubbing noise
Post by mindofitsown on Jan 8th, 2008, 7:39pm
For the last couple of months I've had this odd mechanical rubbing noise emanating from under the car. I've had the entire family in it and nobody can agree for certain exactly where its coming from  ???
The repetition rate of the noise suggests it could be at wheel speed but its difficult to tell because it only is noticeable above 30mph. It resonates at about 50mph and gets quieter at 70mph. I was wondering about wheel bearings but I would have expected more of a shriek or squeel and worsening realtively quickly. I've checked the rear hubs for looseness (had this before and had to replace entire hub) but all is well. I don't think its cv joints as I would expect the classic 'clicking' sound that gets worse round corners and cornering makes no difference. I'm begining to suspect the prop shaft u/js or centre bearing. Does anyone know the differential ratio for 2.0L DOHC? This may help eliminate it from enquiry if it spins significantly faster than the driveshafts. The only vibration I can sense is very slight and seems to affect the whole car not just steering wheel. Mileage is 111K.

Being that it's worse at 50 mph, then gets quieter at 70mph, then have you considered a rear wheel/tyre problem ?

Maybe the rear wheels are out of balance ?  ......or could it possibly be 'budget tyre syndrome' where the cheaply manufactured tyre starts to go out of shape due to a ply problem  :-/

I had this a few months back....the car was fine until you hit 60mph, then the whole car would slightly vibrate/drone until it reached 70mph & all was fine again  ???.....Was diagnosed as a an ever so slighly out of shape (four month old) budget tyre  :)

It's worth checking out  ;)

Ah! Interesting thought. Though I doubt the balance theory its still possible. I have to admit the tyres are budget ones all round and about 9 months (10K) old. I have very recently swapped over the offside tyres and no difference. I'll try doing the same with the nearside and maybe the effect will be more pronounced at the front. Not heard of the budget tyre snydrome before, any more info on this?
Anyway thanks Jonny, I've got something to go on.

I would also go along with the tyre noise idea .. With the cars running so quite these sorts of noises are very hard to diagnose......and FIND.

Not sure 'budget tyre syndrome' is actually a recognised term.....it was how the tyre fitter described how cheapo tyres can suffer from manufacturing faults  ::)

In my case the inside edge of the tyre had actually started to become deformed due to separation of the tyre ply  ???....... :)
