Title: HO2S ?? one or two ??
Post by a11mcr on Jan 8th, 2008, 10:37pm
Hi all just lookig at the manuals on the main site (got some work planned for the weekend).
Now it says there are two HO2S sensors (front & rear) but mine only has the front is this right? 2.3 16V.
Hope someone can shed some light on this (hunting at idle and very low MPG).
Cheers
mark

Yep, the 2.3 only has the one (pre-cat) sensor  ;)

Have you had a scan done to see if there any fault codes ?  :)

Not necessarily. Russian wiring diagrams say that there was a post-catalyst sensor before 4/97 in manual and auto 2.3 DOHC.

I'm not fibbing, honest  ;)

Update.......I've deleted what I wrote before, in favour of the following link, that proves that the 2.3 should be running at a much higher mpg that the late teens....

Maybe something got lost in translation somewhere along the line  :-/

Are there any 96/early 97, 2.3 owners on here that can confirm the existance of a post-cat lambda on their vehicles ?  :)

I'm pretty sure I've seen a post cat sensor on my 1995 2.0 16v

My '97 2.3 has a blank plug screwed into the exhaust post cat & the socket for a sensor tucked up by the autobox.
I queried it with Trevor at fordpartsuk sometime ago & he said mine had never had one (checked against the VIN).

Interesting, I believe mine's the same, 'S' Reg
I wonder if you fitted one it would be recognised and used by the ecu and also if it did, weather it would make any difference.... just a thought :-/

Guys, excuse me if I'm miles off here but the second lambda is normally a 'cat efficiency sensor' and is a requirement of the OBD-II emissions regulations (I think came into force in 1996?), it has nothing to do with the running of the engine like the first (pre cat) one does. As the Scorp is regarded as a 'parts bin special', this might explain things ;)

No mine didn't have one either and it was an July/August 1996 build, only the pre cat like Jonny's.

In minimum, it must have been intended to fit the post cat sensor as you can see here in figure 2 of picture 7. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/exhaust/exhaustcat16v.pdf

Wiring diagrams (English as well as German) say two sensors in 2.3 DOHC manual "As of before 04/97", and in auto "Sensors before 04/96". So consequently only pre-cat sensor in 2.3 DOHC manual "as of 4/97" , but wondrously "As of 04/97 in auto. So, what was fitted between 4/96 and 4/97 in auto? Maybe only a print msitake.
