Does anyone know of a straightforward swap for the 2.0
16v engine with a simpler fuel/ignition system?
Something like the Pinto would be ideal or even a non-Ford if it was feasible.
I asked some time ago about putting the 2.9 12v in but that seemed to be more trouble than it was worth.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

i would think virtually any of the old Ford engines should fit fairly easily, the Granada engines should be fairly easy to do Dr Frankenstein ;)

Or a Diesel??

2.0 Pinto in a Scorpio? Not if you want to be able to pull away at the lights old chap ;). Problem isn't the engine, it's the car getting old around it. Even if you chuck the engine you still get lumbered with all the other bits that cause issues..

Shove a small block V8 or a V12 in there and be happy ;)

The 2.3 engine will go in without any hassle, but unfortunately the fuel & ignition system is virtually the same as well :)

Don't quite understand what you are looking for ???

Why bung in a pinto when it obviously won't be as good as the RS 2000 engine that is already fitted ?

Pintos were okay for Cortina's, Capri's & Escorts etc, but the Scorp is so much heavier than these old cars.

When Ford released the MK1 Granada in this country, it came with a 2.0 litre pinto engine or a 3.0 litre V6 Essex engine.....the 2.0 litre was so under powered in such a heavy car that 0 - 60 was 'in your own time' ;D

Then there is the question of what to do with the engine management & all the wiring ?..... even an 'uber' Ford technician would most likely question his sanity before taking on such a task :-/

I assume he longs for those bygone days when people could fix their own cars at the side of the road without all the electrical jiggery pokery :)

A nice old MK2 Granada 2.8 engine would do it :)

Nowt much wrong with all the modern electrical jiggery pockery, it now tells you what's ailing it ;D

Trouble is all the jiggery pokery tends to be endowed with a feeble streak unlike the good old carby fuelled 2.8 lump,still thats progress for you!

You are all absolutely right guys - on all fronts. Personally I'm not impressed with the DOHC engine. It doesn't seem to have the grunt that our Pinto-fitted Mk. 3 Granadas had.
However, it's now all academic. I'm going back to plan A and selling both.

Pat, to be honest mate I really liked the 16v, at least in 2.3 form. It's never going to be a sixer, but it's a nice engine and I'd have one again even over a 24v.

It would have more torque than the normal 2.0 and also a lot quieter and smoother revving than any other Scorpio engine. We had (have) a 2.0 pinto in the Capri and true, it had a decent amount of low end but I remember it lacking badly at higher revs when you needed kickdown, strangled by the C3 autobox (then again, I do remember once being in the Scorpio and being overtaken by a Focus derv while I was on kickdown ::)). And a Capri weighs nowhere near what a Scorpio does. And by the time our Capri had done 40k it needed a partial rebuild; the pinto lump was fairly good for the time but I'm under no illusion that it's as rugged or powerful as the 16v, if I had the choice between the two I know which I'd be dropping into the Capri when I get it sorted.

Why not lower the gearing (or put smaller diameter wheels on)? Give you more grunt, obviously at the expense of speed, economy and quiet. Simple fact is there's no way round the 1.5t the Scorpio weighs. A diesel engine would give grunt and economy, but IME the VM2.5 isn't very economical in the Scorp - 31-33mpg tops on motorway, but it does have the distinct advantage of being able to run 100% cooking oil during warmer weather...
