Title: Drilled Airbox
Post by Tons_of_fun on Jan 15th, 2008, 3:39pm
Hi all.Have aquired a spare airbox (thanks matt  :) ) & was wondering if anyone on here has tried the "drilled airbox" mod & what your results were ? Have done this already on my brothers 24v probe & it seems to work quite well. But not sure how much warm air it will draw in from under the bonnet ?.Thinking of ditching the air intake pipe (too narow & twisted) & drilling up to 20x 10mm holes in front of box (closest to back of headlight). Finally applying fine alloy mesh to the inside of box, behind the holes to prevent bigger debris entering & fitting a pipercross foam panel filter. As always opinions appreciated...............Craig :)

i take it the pipercross is a higher flow rate, this will make the mixture weak, unless of course the engine management is self compensating.
you want the coolest air possible flowing in, it has a higher density, which means more oxygen, better combustion.

EECV is self compensating - that what Lambdas are for :-)

on the air box side, a Cossie engine bay is VERY hot, I expect the mod wont work so well and may even harm power.

WOW, i had the drilled air box mod when i bought the car, i didn't notice any kind of extra performance. I have covered the holes and insulated them with silicone, there wasn't any kind of change.
A good mod is to take the intake funnel of a 2.0 or 2.3 and put it to the 2.9. In this case the coldest air will be taken. I did this mod, but i haven't done a long trip to see if there's any difference, and beside this the weather was very cold (-15 degrees)

I have a Pipercorss panel filter - no idea if it's made a difference but at leats you'll never have to buy a new filter every service (just clean it).

Fresh news from my cossie, it likes.....or i like the intake funnel of the 2.0. No difference in power or sound but the mpg got better.

Before i was getting around 16 mpg in town, now i'm getting around 18

almoust incredible  :o

Hi
The easiest way i have seen this done is to plug in your OBD software and do a run with a good pulling run and note down the MAF readings then drill the air box and do it again and look over the figures and make up your own mind. I helped a friend do this with a Vw Golf 4Motion V6. The figures were up after the mod but no where near with decent intake pipes of a decent bore with no big bends in did.
