Title: Autobox oil renew
Post by Octavian_P on Feb 1st, 2008, 4:02pm
Hi there

I have a kind of problem with my cossie. When i run it in heavy traffic or at low speeds, after 20-30 minutes the auto box starts to slip excessively when is chageing gears. I i stop and put my fingers on the auto box cooler it's extremely hot. I face a dilemma, i have wanted to check the fluid leved and had the following results:

1) Engine cold (started for 5 minutes), selected all gears 3 times, engine on, selector in P, the level was way under minimum

2) Engine warmed up (10 minutes), selected all gears 3 times, engine on, selector in P, the level was a bit over minimum

3) Engine normal temperature (over 15 minutes of running), took a small drive, selected all gears 3 times, engine on, selector in P, the level was over minimum, but it still wasn't near normal.

I have added 0.3-0.4 liters of ATF, kept the car runing and the level was normal.

I thought that was the problem, so took the car for a longer ride, after 30 minutes of harsh traffic and a thousands of start-stops it started slipping again. When i have arrived at home took the oil dipstick out and measured again the level. Well not the oil mark is way over Maximum !!!. :o

I'm having this trouble from when i changed the timing chains. The auto box cooler was disconnected and about half liter of oil was lost (and added.) Also before the box was behaving great, oil was reddish, and has a filter changed 30.000 km ago along with 4 liters of oil. Now the oil has blacked a bit, but still smells mineral and doesn't have any kind of stuff floating in it.

I'm thinking of changing the oil, but i don't want to dismantle the pan, can I empty the oil by disconnecting the cooler ? (something like it's written here: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/aboxfilters.htm)

You can if you wish to do it that way but you will still be using the OLD dirty filter and a lot of the old oil..... When checking the level in the gear box it should be up to working temperature which is well over 100 C and is done on level ground with the engine running and after seleting all the gears two three times .... like you have already done .. temperature is the KEY  ..Same with power steering as ATF expands a lot between COLD and HOT

Could it be brake bands out of adjustment. ???

Took half a liter out through the dipstick, it's peaty black  :( but it still doesn't smell burned. It has the viscosity of watter, so that's why the auto box goes so poor. I'll try a change.
