Title: Cossie (1997) Thermostat?
Post by gerryw on Feb 18th, 2008, 3:11pm
Hi all,

Love of my life:- Scorpio 24v Cosworth - Reg 1997.

I think I need a new thermostat as the heater is blowing out cold air...

So I called into a Ford Parts Garage and he tried to sell my the whole kit (Thermostat & Housing) for £60.00 as he said they came in one unit.

Now I am sure that this is not the case? Can anybody shed some light on this as £60.00 for a thermostat!!! Plus the fact that I am told it is a bloody awful job to replace it...

Regards
Gerryw

Yep thats probably about right, its a T-piece affair situated down the nearside of the engine behind the aircon pump.

Make sure its not the Granada one he's looking at or that they are looking at the wrong thing as they did with me, there is a thermoststat housing listed on the microfiche in the "normal" top/front area of the engine but that isnt it..

I'd try flushing your heater matrix before you buy the stat though, check the two pipes inside the bulkhead and see if they are both hot when the engine is running.

Does the engine run cold on the gauge?

yes price is right its only for the stat, doesnt come
with the housing, and you can only get them from
Fords as Highlander says make sure its the "T" shape
one.

Hi again,

Yes Highlander, the engine runs cold on the guage but goes up quite high if it idles for more that say 15 mins and then come right down again when am back on the road again? Also the two hoses on the drivers side on the bulkhead I think are the Heater Matrix pipes and the short one going into engine (by the Gearbox Dipstick) is cool but the other one is quite hot (does that tell you anything)?

Right, the Thermostat, Ok, if I have to pay it so be it...

But I saw this piece about replacing the Thermostat on a page in the forum (URL:- http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/replacestat.htm) and he explains how he done the job... WOW! by the time Ive finished the whole engine will be out?

Seriously, he says he had to remove the A/C compressor to get access to the Thermostat but I thought that the A/C gas had to be removed by an A/C engineer which then brings me to another question... I bought a A/C Compressor from one our own Forum members and Im getting a garage guy to fit it but I have to degas it myself before he touches it.

So, can I do the Degas of the A/C system and if I can I can kill two birds with one stone. I can get the Garage guy to replace the A/C Compressor and fix the new Thermostat at the same time (thats after Ive flushed the Matrix to make sure it isnt that)! What do you think guys...

You can unbolt the aircon compressor and swing it on the pipes to get to the thermostat. However if you are changing it you can either be a naughty boy and let the gas go for global warming,or rather take it to someone who services aircon and get them to evacuate it,then return there later to get your gas back.My regular bloke charges about £45 for both jobs.

Well going by your description of your two heater pipes one hot and one cold you have a blocked or airlocked matrix.

Take both hoses off and flush the matrix both ways a few times with a garden hose to try and clear it, you may be lucky.
Your thermostat is ok, you dont need a new one.
How high does your gauge go when its sitting?
if its nearly at the red your cooling fans may not be cutting in?

Any aircon guy will remove your gas, fit your compressor and regas it, dont use the garage if they cant do the gas side of it

Hi again

I previously did the test that Highlander asked me to do and reported that the heater matrix in/out pipes were:- the in pipe = hot, the out pipe =cold and I got a reply that the matrix was probably blocked and the thermostat was OK.

However, I carried out the same test today by running the engine at 4000rpm while static and waiting for the temp. guage to reach midway.

When the midway point was reached the main radiator pipe was very hot, the fans where not working and both the in and out heater matrix pipes where very hot.

But when the heater was turned on (set at 26) it still blew out cold air (the a/c was turned off as the A/C compressor is broken).

So where do I go from here???

Any help would be appreciated...
