Title: Rear wheel arch lip angle
Post by chrali on Feb 22nd, 2008, 3:31pm
Hi chaps,

Whats the correct angle for the wheel arch lip? I would expect it to be at a right agle (90degress), but the latter half of the arch towards the rear is more like 45 degrees.

Is this .............
i. normal from the factory?
ii. normal for the age of car as the arches are corroded internally.
iii. too weird and something odds happened in the past!

Should I soft rubber mallet it back to 90degrees? There isnt really any rust visible on the arches from the outside.

I didnt notice it before, but its one of those things that once you notice you cannot ignore.

I'd appreciate any help ...

(now what was I meant to be working on :) )

When the arch lip starts to "sag" the angle of the lip edge will unfold itself.Best thing to do is.....Clean out all the crud in & around the internal arch lip.Wash & dry the area, remove any loose rust (if any),GENTLY start to tap the arch back into shape starting from the furthest edge working inwards (if you can get one , a form is a handy addition whilst doing this). When happy with the shape treat with a rust curing product if needed & then either apply a liberal coating of underseal or as i did a good coat of hamerite. HTH.....Craig  :)

Thats a shame , if I read that right , youre saying that it is hidden rust.

I guess I had a feeling that angle wasnt right. Theres no rust on the ouside so I hope I can catch it in time.

What exactly is a form and where do I get one from.

 chrali.
Dont worry too much,it,s along way from terminal. When rust starts to appear vertically, see a body man for decent repairs.

Hi Chrail.Sorry m8,didnt mean to frighten you.It really isnt as difficult as it sounds, just a case of removing  loose rust IF ANY ,then treating it.A form is a flat / curved piece of metal which panel beaters use to get shapes into metal as they are beating it.The idea is to tap the panel from one side with the form against the panel from the other side.If the angle isnt too droopy then use a small weight hammer & start from the furthest edge of the drop & slowly tap the arch back into shape.

Yup, mine was exactly the same, the final couple of inches before the bumper do angle down. The rust on mine came as a lump at the seam where it joins the bumper, probably looked worse than it was.
