Hi all, I've been busy stripping out the remainder of the leather interior from the spares car and have a quick question.
When removing the centre consul on a manual, how does the wood effect surround with the gear lever gator come off the actual gear lever? I've just undone all the staples to remove it but I assume that the lift mechanism for reverse gear has to be removed to take it off in one piece. I'd appreciate any tips on this as I can't find anything about it in the interior trim manual and I'd rather do it properly when I strip things out of my TD.

The leather gaiter needs to be turned inside out. That will reveal the inner neck of the gaiter where it is tightened around the gear lever. There is usually a cable tie threaded through the neck. Snip it and the neck opens. It is simply a 'drawstring' type of fastening. The wooden surround of course just prises out of the centre consul as you appear to have discovered. There is no need to detach the leather unless you want to replace it . ;)

turn it inside out, at the top there is a 'hem' inside this is a plastic tie strap, just snip it, job done. to put it on the gearstick its just the same in reverse.

Thanks for that guys, I never thought on looking for a hidden draw string :-[ hopefully by tomorrow I'll be enjoying a full pumice leather interior in my TD :) The big question will be whether the appropriate wiring for the heated seats etc is waiting for me under the carpet! Watch this space :o

If the car you are putting the heated seats in had electric movement control then it is there, the part of the loom you need to connect to is under the drivers side and take the part of the loom from the donor car for the switches and relay for the centre consul and electrics and just swop over ... one of the screws on the centre consul can be a bit awkward to get off but otherwise straight forward job.....

Hi Snoopy, all the wiring was there just as you said, I just had to plug in the extra loom from the spares car and everything is working as it should :) I did have to get the welder out though, when I had the carpet out to change that over, I noticed a bit of corrosion around the seat mount nearest the sill on both sides. just as well doing it when everything was out so nice & solid again! The only 'pumice' bit left to change now is the main dash surround, looking much better than the black cloth, just how an Ultima should be 8)

Hi,

I am doing the same as yourself. Can you confirm that there is only one small plug in the floor pan under the drivers side seat and a large 6 point one under the carpet in the floor pan of the passenger seat.

I can also see a yellow socket under both seats and neither appear to have any associated wiring, any ideas?

Hi Steve, I think there was more than one plug on the drivers side. I do remember seeing a yellow plug on both sides as well. My car had an electric drivers seat but a manual passenger one. There was a large white plug on the passenger side which had the loom for the drivers side plugged into it. I took the loom from the spares car which plugged into this white plug and gave all the wiring for the heated seats.

The YELLOW sockets are for the pre seat belt tensioners and side air bags if you have them fitted .. some of the early cars only had mechanical preseat tensioners.
