What sort of noise can be expected from a diif that is suspect and any symptoms?

I know that!!! but what I am trying to tie down is it the diff, sure it is not bearings but was simply asking for some helpful comments on type of noise thta could be expected. Ie. paying for a diff when it was only the gubins angle dangler at .50p see what I mean :(

I am under the impression from other posts on here that it is very uncommon for the diff to go faulty, Noises usually turn out to be wheel bearing based, not neccesarily easy to identify..... Wheel bearings can be problematic and there are lots of posts and info on the main site if you do a search. I am just wraping up at work to go home so I haven't the time to find them for you, someone else may be along soon.
It definately won't be the gubins angle dangler at .50p cos thes are unbelievably reliable. I have NEVER had to replace one yet.... ;D

Thanks Pete sure iti s not the bearings both new sets, and it does not sounds like the other halfs car did when the bearing went. Just a long constant drone thats rises in pitch and falls with the speed. I have mechanics sat or otherwise in the rear trying to pinpoint this, and all say diff, but I know what you mean about other posts saying diff is rare to fail. Just want to be sure before paying out.

Chieftain.
These diffs do occasionally suffer from noisy bearings,but the sound is heard more through an open window when passing buildings or fences,and is more of a sighing or hissing sound than the normal drone of a wheel bearing.They go on for years making this noise.

Gozz thenks for that, as I said I am not 100% it is the diff, the noise is very intense with all windows shut, no vibration though, could the centre bearing be at fault? :'(

In my experience, diffs tend to drone when they are worn & the drone gets louder & more intense the faster you go :)

Cor, can't remember of hand, a long time ago with many many pounds spent since.... a phonecall to fmd will soon get you a price.

On my present car 2.3 I have fitted second user one's.... complete hub assemblies and had no problems. Alot easier to fit too.

If the gears are getting shot the noise is worse on the overun,and this is in need of urgent seeing to ! Were your wheelbearings fitted by someone in the know,ie were they torqued to 200 ft lbs,the clearance is preset and MUST be torqued correctly,I have known mechanics to treat them as twin taper roller front wheel bearings and just nip them up.

My experience of ailing diffs is of a droning noise of a frequency which always matches the cars speed, though it can get louder at certain speeds. They can drone on for many thousands of miles.

Indeed, a slight drone from the diff at certain speeds or overrun doesn't mean it's in imminent danger of failure, they are sturdy units.

I'd advise against the old sawdust trick :-* but maybe a diff oil additive will reduce the noise a wee bitty.

Thats sounds as good a descriptions as any, am trying oil additive shortly, Gazz I did the bearings so yes they were torqued up as per correct fig ;D
