Post by Tons_of_fun on Mar 17th, 2008, 7:43pm
Evening all.My 3rd RDS 7000 stereo is now begining to loose it,s display (fading) ,so i will probably be replacing it with a 5000 series unit. Before i sweet talk Matt into selling me one of his  ;),i would like to know if there will be any difference in volume / sound quality between the two units ?I love the sound the 7000 gives & dont want to compramise on this. Thanks in advance .....craig  :)

The 5000 series has 4x7 Watt power comparing it with the 7000 series which gives out 4x20 Watt

I put a 5000 in mine and to be totally honest have not really noticed much difference, I can hear it the contols adjust for bass etc just as I like them.  All in all i am happy with it, suppose it really boils down to a personal thing.

Thanks for the replys chaps.Intresting point with the power output of both units.I was always of the opinion that scorpios had a seperate amplifier behind the passenger dash panel.Or am i thinking of granada scorpios ?BTW just out of intrest i called into ford today & enquired how much a brand new 7000 would be  :-/...Are you ready for this .......£468.12  :o :o :o

Scorpio do have an amplifier under the dash, but it was fitted to the early models.

Here is the whole story:

and...ermmm.... yes the 7000 unit is made from pure gold and the display contains liquid Swarovski chrystals.  ::)

You know TOF if you open up the radio carefully take off the front facia, if I remember it is four screws, then inside you will see a ribon cable which is a number of tracks etched onto a strip of polythene type material.
On end of this is inside the display panel, however it is only pushed into the connector slot and can be carefully removed.  The other end is also slotted into a strip connector on the circuit board and can also be eased out,Don't distort it as you do this....
Once it is removed you can clean it with some Meths ( {}No DON'T have a swig) clean the connector strip as well and then carefully align the ribon cable and ease it back in.  I did this with mine which had no display at all about a year ago and it has been right as rain ever since.....
It is caused by light oxidation of the connecting tracks...

Hope that Helps, it's certainly worth a try.

Thanks for that pete.As soon as the weather gets a bit better i will give that a go.The airing cupboard did the trick but as soon as the cold got to it the display started to fade  :(.This is my 3rd ultima now & every one had the same fault  :o.Never seems to effect the 5000 series though  :-/

I have just started to have the intermitent problem with the clip out security pad off the front of the radio unit.
This usually happens in cold weather.   I will take it in house and bridge two pencils with it, buttons up and then rest a wieght so it is pushing down on the button side overnight to bend it back the other way in order to make the contacts connect better.  This usually works... ;)
