Hi Scorpio-Man,
Thank you for your reply.well the 'p' reg she has now is the 2.3 16v as in the picture, the scrap 'm' reg thats still on her driveway is a 2.0ltr as in the pictures....and i did look today at both abs pumps...and although they are in the same location on the wing...they seem a little different..i can see the module sitting under the pump on the 2.0ltr..but not on the 2.3..it just seems to be the pump..there are wires running to it..so i would think fords changed something over the years with these models.??.anyway im hoping the bulb has blown on the instrument cluster...hope luck is on my side for once :)....thank you again scorpio-man...regards den. :)

This is the teves 20 unit
Red arrow = controller
White arrow = plug
The motor plug is below the arrowed plug

Thank You tompion,i understand...thank you very much,i doubt its a problem with this unit..but once i see if the bulb has blown or missing i will know how to deal with it...thank you again and to all the other kind people that replied :)..regards den.

It's a soldered in LED

Post by joe-satch on Mar 20th, 2008, 8:19pm
is it!!!..i thought it was a bulb....so to gain access to it i have to remove the clocks.....i must say that it dont look like someone in the past has ever removed the dash or clocks to take out the abs light...so tompion would you know the voltage of the LED that needed. please.(or maybe needed)..is it 12v to the instrument cluster??...regards den.

Sorry don't know the voltage.
Not heard of one failing before, I would suspect something else.
Can't remember off hand whether cutting the feed to the light would cause it to stay on or go off.
There's a contact in the big plug to the ABS that shorts out when you unplug it which I think makes the light come on so probably a break in the wire would make it stay off.

The wiring diagrams should be here, but the site is down at the moment:

yes tompion..i now see the electricial plugs that are attched to the pump...as i lifted the bonnet of the car...all is clear to me now...thank you very much..regards den. :).

Hi all,
I can update my last posts regarding the abs....today i did a voltage check on all wires from all the fuses concerned with the abs unit...and wire continuity to the plug at the abs unit from the fuses...all checked out ok...so its the led at fault or the abs ecu has gone down lock-stock and barrel....well i now know what i have to do to get it working as it should...looks to me like i can remove the abs ecu by undoing a few small nuts and removing it,that way the main body can stay put.....and no brake pipes to remove....a job for the better weather i think..thanks to all who helped out with this problem..regards den. :).

Best to use the right socket, female version of torx bit (well it is on mine). I got by using an ordinary socket 'till, it chewed up one of them & I had to drill it out.

Post by joe-satch on Mar 26th, 2008, 9:22am
yes i will do that tompion, the ecu seems to be held by 4 small nuts...i take it that once these nuts are un-done the ecu will come off the main body of the abs unit...i feel im close to solving this abs light problem...of course it could be the LED thats been taken out...i will have a look when the weather warms up a little.thank you again..regards den. :).

Yes it comes off easily, although the bolts can be troublesome if corroded. Both the units I have were held with bolts using this type of socket:

Have a look here you may see something of use:

thank you for that info tompion, and my daughters 2.3 ultima has the teves 20,as you have shown in the picture...in another post by another member i have just read that when the plug is removed from the ecu...a sprung contact closes and lights the abs light on the dash.....well i have had the plug off the ecu many times and not once has the abs light came on,so as i said im getting close in solving this problem,so it looks to me that the LED has been removed or blown...i will find out in a day or so...then i will know what to do regarding the abs-ecu...to find another in a scrapyard to try..then if all is ok..try to repair the one i take off as you have done...in your very helpful posts...thank you again..regards den. :).

Hi all.right its up-date time regarding the ABS LIGHT......today i took out the instrument cluster of the ultima...i gained access to the LEDS in the area of the clocks.....and someone in the past has used black tape to cover the ABS LED,so that is dont show on the dashboard.....ok all back togerther and ignition turned on......ABS LIGHT is on all the time...i new it would be.so its failed test stage one.....so ok....would anyone like to please tell me what its now likely to be??....ABS ECU??....so it looks like we will be visiting a scrapyard soon,i would take the ECU apart....but i would like to have a spare to hand so that the car is at least driveable while i solder the ecu board..thank you for any replies..regards den. :).

The best bet is to get the codes read, I bought a lead in the end, would've saved me a lot of time if I'd done that first.

If the ABS light stays on all the time - comes on as you turn the ignition on and STAYS ON continuously, then it means the ABS system has failed its static diagnostics. That means either a problem with the ABS controller, the wiring, or the wheel sensors.

The other failure mode is the dynamic one. The light comes on with the ignition, goes off, then comes back on again at >15mph. That means the ABS unit is probably OK, but is not seeing a correct active signal from all of the wheel sensors.

If it is failing the static test, most likely it will be either a bad or corroded connection or a faulty sensor. Most common bad connection is at the front as these are open to the weather, mounted on the inner wing. The rear ones are inside under the rear seat.

You can do a rough check on the sensors, they are just coils and should measure around 1,020 Ohms (1K Ohms) give or take a bit - across the two terminals.

Reading the codes would indicate which sensor(s) might be at fault.

I echo Tompion's last comment...i had abs lights coming on/off and folk. with good intentions of course saying check sensors etc. but there is no logic in doing that. I waited 3 mths until I got a  lead from obd-2.com alex peper in states that read abs codes  ...i ended up using the tricom cable others wouldnt work for advanced abs codes on my car

BUT it instantly showed that all sensors were fine and problem was ecu on the abs unit ....it is easy to change and in fact thanks to tompion's discovery re bad solder joints on the motor connections i managed to fix ...get an obd cable and see whats going on rather than hit/miss

Thank you to all you gents who replied...im going to tackle the abs-ecu tomorrow (friday) there can be no harm in taking it off and re-soldering the board..please forgive me gents..but could you please tell me the type of cable i need to do a test...and where can i get it from...??...thank you your all so very kind...regards den. :).

Unlike the older ABS unit the Teves 20 will fail the static test (light stays on) if there are unresolved codes in the controller, you don’t have to clear the codes it just needs to pass the rolling tests & will go out then.
In which case you could check the sensor rings are clean (by clean I mean nothing between the teeth, doesn’t matter about a bit of surface rust). The back sensors normally come off easily enough & often have magnetic crud stuck to them, you can see the sensor ring through the hole.
The front sensors almost certainly won’t come out without damage, you need to remove the plastic centre cap on the inside of the hub and clean from there.
Whereabouts are you? Someone may have a test lead nearby.

In the link I posted earlier:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1174400199;start=

Do the test in the 5th post down, easy enough to do on the car, & if it fails you know there's a fault in the controller (if it passes it could still be the other pin faulty)

Hi to all members and to you tompion...well i can now say that the abs is now sorted..i took off the abs-ecu...and i took it apart...and i re-soldered the 4 large flat connectors and the 2 round motor pins...i put the case all back together..re-installed it back on the abs unit..made all the connections....and switched on the ignition....abs light comes on..and goes off within 3 seconds..drive the car...abs light remains off...i took off the ecu again to give it a good covering around the seam of the ecu with sealant..its now back on the car doing its job....may i now say a big thank you to all members that gave there knowledge to the problem.kind regards den. :).ps daughter will be making a donation shortly to the site.
