Title: 2.3 DOHC 16v overheating and overpressurising
Post by fundrpuss on Apr 7th, 2008, 8:29pm
Had my lovely Scorpio for about a year without any problems.Suddenly noticed her overheating fast, pulled over and stepped into a sauna. Replaced burst hose(lower to heater matrix, it was perrished slighty) checked thermostat,it was fine. Filled up system, bled every bubble of air.Runs for upto 3 mile, temperature soars to 3/4 gauge, and sounds like a pressure cooker.Spitting coolant from header tank overflow.Havnt checked water pump yet but im going to flush and back flush tommorrow with my fingers crossed,Any particular hoses to aim for first? Any suggestions? Have been locked to this site for a week now and have learned so much about my Scorpio but keep going of on a tanjent with so many great tips!

Two phrases i didnt want 2 hear!!!!!!!!! Was hoping to open pump and see missing bits of fins and wash them away with a hose!!!! I've always been the optimist.  :'( Dont know if even with this site i can handle that job,but gonna give my best and then "phone a friend" if it beats me. Is the overpressure a sign of "crack/blown gasket"

Definately sounds like the head gasket has gone. You may be lucky and find it is just the gasket and the head isn't cracked. Have the cooling system pressure tested by a garage to confirm.

Will get that done before i muck about with flushing! waters perfectly blue,no sign of any corrosion/oil etc, was just hoping for a blockage as an easy/cheap option! As i said optimist :-/

I’ve had similar when I flushed out the system which was just an airlock.

An air lock can be quite difficult to shift especially if the matrix is a bit blocked which they often are, so worth another go at it. Try partly draining down, pull off the small hose to the heater matrix from the stat housing, hold the hose up high slowly fill the reservoir with coolant till it starts to run from the stat housing. Put your thumb over the hole, finish filling, and gently lower the hose till coolant comes from that, put your other thumb over it, now push the hose back as quickly as you can.

I fitted a drain valve into the top matrix hose so I could fit a length of tube and a funnel which I pour coolant into, open the valve and run the engine till bubbles stop coming out.

I would suggest covering the alternator with a plastic bag, the charging light has a nasty habit of staying on if you get antifreeze into it.

You've gave me a litle light and hope!!!!! the heater is workin as it should, the air,con smells of cheap curry but no damp on floor, asked last owner and he never used it much, or sunroof which has seized.(he had the car from just under 2 yr old and full service from same mechanic all its days).Havnt told him of these probs, older guy, love him 2 bits coz he real cool for his years and he would probably offer to pay for repairs. Gonna run half a loch through every hose and try it again till it gets dark . How does the atuo tensioner work? right hand thread and then?  does it need reset or i does lossening the nut ,loosen the drive belt on its own?

The tensioner is self adjusting.
To remove the belt you put a long spanner on the hexagon at the centre of the pulley & turn (not the bolt that holds it to the block) – You’re not undoing anything, just relieving tension by turning the arm.

I don’t do it that way, I pull up the top run of the belt which makes the tensioner swing down I then wedge a bit of wood between the tensioner arm and the casting lugs on the front of the engine.

Have looked at darn near every post on this forum and loved the accuracy and honesty. The ford details and drawings although being a great help have left me a little lacking! the drive belt is a concern !!! want to check impellers on water pump but 1 piece belt covering so many parts worries me that i'm gonna throw off so many parts if i mess up......Hints tips???????

You a mechanic or just a very clever peep???? that was a way i was taught years ago but being an amatuer at these things nowadays and engines being so sensitive i was nervous to employ old strong arm tactics......

If that slips how the hell do i get the belt back on due to the the pressure?

You'll either have to use a long spanner or lever something against it, plenty of scope for skinning your knuckles so gloves are a good idea.

You push the tensioner down in a clockwise motion, so should not be pushing against the thread  :)

Just a thought, are the cooling fans working okay ?  :)
