Title: Power Steering Noise on Full Lock Post by fsu2.912v96 on Apr 9th, 2008, 7:18pm Hi all, I just changed my power steering rack as the last one had a leak. No leak anymore but there is a noise when on right full lock only (it does not happen when left full lock). Where could this noise be coming from? Hope is not the rack... How serious is it? |

Title: Re: Power Steering Noise on Full Lock Post by fsu2.912v96 on Apr 9th, 2008, 8:15pm Is more of a groaning, rubbing sound... Could it be air in the power steering system caused by the old leak? |

Title: Re: Power Steering Noise on Full Lock Post by Simmo on Apr 9th, 2008, 9:10pm If it is air you need to lift the front of the car,to avoid undue strain on the rack, and turn the steering wheel from 'lock to lock' a few times to clear the air. Do NOT hold it on full lock as that puts undue pressure on the seals. |

Title: Re: Power Steering Noise on Full Lock Post by fsu2.912v96 on Apr 13th, 2008, 6:04pm This is getting confusing now… I spoke to the garage that fitted the rack and they say the problem is coming from the new track rod ends. Apparently they sent two right side ones instead of right and left. The mechanic said he could see it rubbing against the tyre or something along those lines. The company that supplied the parts said they could not fit the wrong one because the threads where the rod ends fit go in opposite directions. Also I think the noise was there before they fitted the rack... I would appreciate if someone could confirm these theories, cos unfortunately my knowledge of mechanics is very limited... |

Title: Re: Power Steering Noise on Full Lock Post by jonnycab on Apr 13th, 2008, 7:23pm Both track rods have the same right hand thread, so it is possible to fit two right hand ones. Trouble is, they are shaped in a certain way & are a mirror image of each other. So if you put the the wrong side on, then there is the possibility that it could rub on the inside of the wheel. If this is the case, then I'd get the garage to put the proper side on pronto, as it may cause damage to the track rod end, track rod, or even the rack :) |
