Title: r reg Scorpio estate diesel
Post by mikeart on Apr 24th, 2008, 6:45pm
Ok, upfront i know nothing about cars at all, apart from driving them that is, i have just bought an R reg Scorpio estate diesel, and i love it, great to drive and has all the doo dads one could ever want, leather seats and no rust at all, it has gone in the garage for a hand brake fix, today i get a phone call, Mike you may need to spend some money on this car said Lee. "these guys i do trust and have used them for over 13 years" you have an oil leak and your engine is one that is rather rare, also you need a sill done and something about it is an engine they used in planes ?, any way with one thing and another it seems i am looking at £400, as i only paid £400 would you guys and gals say it would be worth doing  :-/

Well, VM do make boat engines, but not sure about aircraft (do they even do diesel airplanes?).  Also the engine isn't that rare as several other makes use the same one, or at least a very close variant of it, namely Rover 800s, Jeep Cherokee, Vauxhall Frontera, etc.  You'd need to be more specific about where the oil leak is and even if it's engine oil as opposed to something else like power steering fluid. Assuming the engine is running fine then I'd say it's worth getting fixed because it'll run on cooking oil and that could save you whatever you pay on repairs.

difficult to answer, but you've got  quite a sort after diesel model (very rare if its also an auto) cheap, if the condition of the car is good then a total price of £800 is not unreasonable, but that obviously doesnt take into account further work that maybe needed in the future.
the engine is the rarer of the 2 diesel engines they used (but that doesnt mean anything), it is the more powerful 125bhp model, the earlier ones like mine are 115bhp, both are generally very good engines. the oil leak could be from the crank oil seal which is a slight weakspot on the diesel engine, but not a big problem for a garage to fix, an engine they used in planes? nope, but they originally used it in boats, they could've been talking about the 'fly by wire' throttle system yours has which is quite normal these days...

All depends what it's worth to you, you could chuck £400 at it and find another £400 needs spending elsewhere within the next few months, or you could ditch it and spend the same amount of money on another car. All part of the chance you take with a 2nd hand car :)

Depends what sort of money/hassle it would be to find what you thought was a comparable car :)

Thanks for the replies your all most kind, the problem is living on a fixed income, i have to buy second hand and although i paid £400 for the car i budgeted for another £400 to get it up to some sort of road worthiness, i have had the handbrake problem sorted that is going to cost £80 +, so i am in budget for now ! so pleased i found this forum as i think i will be sticking with this car for a few years and fully expect to get another of this sort, fed up trying to get spares for foreign cars, again i thank you all, off now to have a good look around your excellent forum, if you would like a link on my website i would be happy to do so, kind regards Mike.
