Title: Buying a Diesel, what to expect?
Post by pappa on Apr 30th, 2008, 10:01am
Hi guys!

Just sold my good old Granny, still crying bloody tears, but already looking forward having a -98 Estate Diesel at 100 thousand km on the clock.

Being a 24V / 16V guy in the past, I have no idea what to expect from a Diesel. The usual stuff, electronic gremlins, vibrating brakes, wornout bushes etc. of course, but the engine. I've let my self understand that it is a reliable one?

Have I made a mistake here?

what to expect?

well, diesel at anything up too £1.45 a litre....

seriously though the vm diesel lump is in general very reliable, it also has no cam chains/belts to worry about.
known faults; have been known to throw push rods, the front crank oil seal can leak, the crank pulley can break as can the pulley belt tensioner, i think thats about it. the front coil springs seem a bit prone to breaking, probably due to the weight of the engine.
it also runs very well on veggie oil which you can use neat in the warmer weather as the scorp uses a bosch fuel pump not lucas and it already has an inline fuel heater. when you change the oil & filter it has 2 sump plugs and holds 6.6 litres!

Thanks for that!

Now I have a vaque idea what to expect. The car is now on its way from
Germany, rather expensive one, but I really hope it will be as good as
I've been told. Only "100tkm" on the clock, it should be brand new -
enginewise.

That year Scorpio will have full electronic control of the engine (EEC-V I believe), so you should be able to do an OBD-II scan on it as per the petrol engines.

I didn't really have any engine problems, but mine was incredibly noisy until thoroughly warmed up, and not great economy even on the motorway.

;D

Mmmmm... french fries, fish & chips....
It's a car that actually can make you hungry :)

Well... Unfortunately the vegetable oil is still a distant dream in Finland. It's hard to come by, even though there is a quite a lot of talk about it in the media.

The fuel economy is another question, I'm sort of expecting something close to 7 litres / 100 km ( 1.53 gallons per 62,5miles ), but is it a dream? What's that, roughly 40mpg?

Quote:
(7 litres) / (100 km) = 40.3544362 miles per Imperial gallon

According to google  ;)

Ha! I would say that I was spot on with my rough estimate.
