I took my car in for the MoT last week, and amongst other things it needed some work to the handbrake to get it to pass. I was told the worst case scenario was the replacement of a wheel cylinder for £180. In addition, I was also told that the rear discs and pads were advisories, and these would also cost £180. I told them to carry out the work necessary for the Mot, but NOT to change the discs + pads, or anything else on the advisory list.

I’ve just had a call today, saying they’ve replaced the rear discs and pads anyway, and they still need to replace the wheel cylinder – which they offered to do at cost for £80!

Which takes the total cost of the Mot from ~£450 to ~£550 – at which point last week I would have told them to give me the car back and I’ll put it on eBay and buy another one, as really £550 is about as much as the car is worth even with a new MoT!!

So what do I do? I’m thinking refuse to pay for the work I told them not to do – would I be right to say that?

Yes, totally - tell them to return the car the condition you told them to leave it in - or not to charge you for the work they did :-)

Yep thats right,tell them to remove the discs and pads that you did'nt ask for,no doubt they've binned the old ones,and find yourself a proper repairer who lives in the real world,to do your other work ! they annoy me beyond comprehension.

Surely wheel cylinders are for cars with drum brakes ???

Yeah, the guy muttered something about that. I dont really know anything about drum brakes, when they said wheel cylinder I assumed they were talking about the brake caliper itself. I guess that means they didnt even look at it properly before quoting me the 'worst case' price ::)

you are so right mike ,handbrakes on rear discs tend to seize up because nobody uses the handbrake (especially on auto,s) they just sit with a foot on the brake.they should be well lubricated at every service. i may be wrong but i don,t think ford remove the road wheels until 40,000 mls. on their service schedule.

Hold your ground and refuse to pay, I had same problem when I returned to UK with a Sierra, took it to local Ford told them to MOT and lots of other bits BUT if it was expensive to contact me first. yes you guessed it they did a lot of work and tried to bill, when i said I would not pay they got all legal and started sprouting things like "you told us to do it regardless" fine till I pointed to the notes the receptionist had made, saying please call before doing any work.!!!!! result 1 MOT and lots of work done free of charge.

We had one of the most annoying days recently. I'd just bought my car, and had it in at the local Ford dealer for a BIG service, which was also to rectify horn and cruise control problems.

Our Ford bill stated that they had checked the horn circuit, and replaced the fuse - and confirmed that everything on the horn circuit was fine and dandy. The horn failed first time I used it, blowing the fuse again. We took the car back in (at huge cost at todays fuel prices!), and they found the horn was faulty, and (some credit here) agreed to replace the horn labour-free. We weren't too impressed that they kept us waiting for hours - it seems ok.

Anyway, the next thing that day was to pop into Halfords for a fit of the new numberplates (the old ones were tatty and badly fitted). I figured that if I fitted them myself, I'd lose out if I mucked it up. They managed to mis-fit BOTH numberplates!

After a day like that I felt like the world of commerce was out to get me!

should of bought a 1 ltr corsa!!
