Title: Throttle body 'special coating'
Post by Jonnycab on Jul 2nd, 2008, 2:45am
Does anyone actually know what purpose this 'special coating' inside the throttle body serves ?

From what I've read about it, it's supposed to trap deposits & stop them from entering the engine  :-/.....or is there another reason for this coating ?  :-/

Maybe it does prevent a few microscopic nasties from entering the inlet manifold but once it gets coated in this filth, then surely there is no way to clean it off to get it perfectly smooth again, even with the special cleaner that Ford say you should use  ???

The only answer surely is to remove the coating & take it back to bare aluminium  :-/

I've got a spare throttle, which I'll clean up & remove all this black coating & take it back to bare aluminium....then polish it up, give it blast with some carb cleaner......maybe even file down the screws that hold the throttle plate to the spindle & polish up the throttle plate.

I wonder if this will make any difference ?.......maybe a slightly smoother air flow causing.......better acceleration & a more economical fuel consumption  :-/......we shall see  ;)

Actually, absolutely smooth air flow in the inlet is a bad thing.  you need some turbulence to aid fuel atomisation.

I thought that a nice smooth & unrestricted throttle body would aid the combustion process  :-/......I don't see this kind of coating on the Weber twin carb on my MK1 Granny, just nice smooth barrel walls.......besides, I'd have thought that the air trunking would have caused enough turbulence  :-/........ ;)

I should think there's enough turbulence in that stupid plastic manifold :(

It probably ain't gonna make a blind bit of difference cleaning up the throttle then  ::)

........But it'll give me something constructive to do though  ;)

that puts my mind at rest, i cleaned mine out with some carb cleaner the other day then wiped the muck off that little yellow sticker to read it.....

Well, no real difference with cleaned up throttle fitted, maybe a little quicker from stop & acceleration feels a tad smoother....although this could all be in my imagination  ::)

It's nice & clean though  ;D.......

There does seem to be a problem with the throttle cable though.....see new post in 'Problems'  :)
