Title: Headlight switch rebuild
Post by mijfife on Aug 12th, 2008, 10:00am
Hi all, had an interesting fault reappear on the Scorpio yesterday, no sidelights front or back but all other lights working fine. This happened before & I tried the switch from the spares car but it made no difference and then it cured itself!
So yesterday I checked all the fuses, relays etc and even had the dash out to check connections on the back of the instrument cluster. I then remembered about the park position on the switch and the sidelights came on in that position. A quick play with a wire bridge sourced the sidelight wires on the switch and they worked, so it was the switch after all  >:( There was no signs of burning on the terminals so I took it to bits and gave it a good clean and all is well again  :)
If you do strip the switch be careful not to loose the two detent springs and balls on either side and note which way everything goes for reassembly as it is quite complicated looking in there! I kept the spare one on the bench as a guide as it can rebuild in different ways but only one works.

Cheers Jim

Hi Jim,
This is the kind of job that I would always take digital photos of along the way.
That way a quick look back at the photo and yor sorted.
:) ;)

Yep, good idea, I'd certainly recommend it for the headlight switch. I'd also not do it in a very messy garage where you're restoring a Hillman Imp, just in case the detent spring shoots out and is never seen again  ::) just as well I had the spare faulty switch to raid  ;D

Cheers Jim
