Post by sierra20 on Sep 30th, 2008, 11:37pm
hi
im new to the site, im looking at 2.3 auto tomorrow its only done 44k, i have look on the site to see what i need to check for on the auto box's but how realiable are they, or would i be better off with a manual?
and where is the dip stip for the auto box so that i can check the condition of the oil?

thanks in advance

First bit of advice would be to learn about it first before rushing out and buying one on impluse ;)

have you read this?

The auto gearbox dipstick on the 2.3 is here, circled red.

As for reliability..remember  the car you are going to look at will be at the very least 10 years old, the autoboxes are very good but they dont last forever so pay your money and take your chance ;)

thanks for the pic and advice thats great,
what sort of milages have you seen out of an auto box?
do you think that as it has only done 50k it should be fairly realiable and how common is it for the "cattle grid" torque convertor problem to happen
thanks

Mine has done 134k now - pretty sure it is the original and even though the fluid is more of a pale brown than cherry pink still works very smoothly.
If the fluid smells like burnt toffee and / or has bits in it that would be bad news although at only 44k can't believe there should be anything wrong with it.

Cattle-grid syndrome is something you can get used to and almost eliminate by adjusting driving style and switching the overdrive in and out when required.

Later models should have the mod to prevent this.

Good luck.

Its NOT the mileage that matters as to how the car was driven really.. A car doing short trips and not getting hot seems to suffer more, with failures but they are really very reliable and the number of severe failures is NOT high.

My scorpio had 150k on the clock when I sold it and that was still all original even the gear box oil ...

LTI Fairway black cabs use the same autobox & it's proved to be very robust, although it's the basic non-electronically controlled version without economy, sport & ice mode settings, but still has the 3 gears & overdrive  :)

My Scorpio Taxi has now done 190K. The previous owner told me that the engine & autobox had been replaced at 98K. Although it's obvious that it has a new engine (brown painted 2.3 Galaxy engine & different engine number to chassis number), it's not obvious that the autobox was replaced at the same time. To me the box looks original & the oil was more light brown than red when I bought it with 130K on the clock......surely the oil couldn't have gone light brown after only 32K on new autobox ?  :-/

So it looks as though my autobox may be the original box & may well have done 190K & is still going strong  :)
