Hello everyone,

It's my first time on here,

I have recently bought a Scorpio 2.9 24v Ultima.
I love the car and decided to take it on a long run down to Cornwall (I live in Grimsby).

The car performed faultlessly on the way and during our time there.

However, on the way home I noticed a knocking sound coming from the rear passenger side wheel.
I pulled over to check and noticed that the insides of both rear tyres were badly worn. The rear passenger side was nearly through to the wire.

It was through looking on the internet for advice that I stumbled upon this site, it's great to see so many fellow Scorpio enthusiasts.

I was wondering if anyone had experienced this scenario with their Scorpio?

First thing is to check the rear wheel bearings. These can from our experiences cause these sort of problems. Make sure you check them well as they can outwardly appear to be tight and shipshape but when the centre locking nut is released fall apart.

Take care and check well. with the weight off the wheels .
other than that it could be worn suspension bushes on the rear.

All the workshop manuals and personal experiences are on the main site. but there are many people opn here who will be willing to offer their advice and personal experiences. In general the are a friendly bunch ;)

right they could have been on the front, and then swapped, are the fronts worn, have you had the tracking check.

incorrect tracking causes tyre wear, as you recently bought the car i would first do as snoopy said then get it 4 wheel tracked. if the track is out then you know why it happened. incorrect tracking normally effects the inside or outer edge of the tyre, are they correctly inflated aswell?

Is the rear quite low & do the rear wheels camber outwards at the bottom quite severely ?...if so then this will cause the inside of the tyres to wear as this part of the tyre will have more contact. I had this problem when I first bought my Scorpio.

The reasons for this could be wheel bearings, but in my case it was weak springs causing severe negative camber. A new pair of rear springs sorted out the problem :)

As for the knocking, could be a drive shaft CV joint :)

As stated, a problem of incorrect suspension geometry - could be front or back, if the tyres have been swapped around by the last owner.

Start by carefully examining the front tyres for the early signs of wear - if its present, then more than likely they were the front tyres previously and the alignment of thw front suspension needs setting.

Comon to see this on cars that have been lowered or spent long periods of time towing or fully loaded.

Must be a serious misalignment to wear a tyre down to the wires.

Unfortunately only the front tracking is adjustable on the Scorp, every other front or rear wheel/geometry alignment fault is either due to wear or damage in the relevant component and will have to be replaced.

These are complicated expensive, quality executive cars, not Astras or Micras.

So repairs will be not be cheap.

BE AWARE BEFORE YOU BUY ONE ???

Knocking noise from rear end ( continuous clonk clonk clonk or bang bang bang ) with severity changing as you round corners is almost certainly a rear CV joint.
Easy job to change - I did one a couple of weeks ago.
New joints about £35 from a motor factors or you can just change the complete driveshaft for a secondhand one - although be aware that the 2 driveshafts are different lengths.
