Title: Battery Light Post by gemeg22171 on Oct 19th, 2008, 2:35pm Have noticed over the last few days very dim battery light on whilst engine running. It does not increase in brightness with everything switched on - headlights and fan on full etc, with engine at tickover. Starts first time. No spinning dials or other 'funnies'. Have checked belts and battery terminal connections seem OK. Any ideas? TA Brian ??? |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by Snoopy on Oct 19th, 2008, 3:27pm Its the first sign that the rectifier in the alternator is on the way out . There are three diodes in it an if one fails then you get a dim light on the dash. It Can go on like that for years and I believe that it is possible to replace the diode pack , but by far the easiest way is to replace the alternator . |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by gemeg22171 on Oct 20th, 2008, 12:22am Thanks Dave, been looking ont' net, seem to be two - 90A and 100A. Is the 100 for the 24V? Are there any other 'donors' with the same fittings or are they model specific? obliged for the info, Brian |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by Simmo on Oct 20th, 2008, 7:52am The details are on the first 'link' on THIS page (http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=Alternator&sp-a=sp100172f5). According to that the 90 is all DOHC the 100 is V6 and there is a 70 for diesels. The other links may be useful as well. ;) |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by gozz on Oct 20th, 2008, 8:36am gemeg. I reckon the 12v and 24v are the same,Simmo's table appears to bear this out,the outward appearance is certainly the same. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by tlundkvi on Oct 20th, 2008, 10:17am Exactly the same fault going on for me. I got 13.4-13.8V readings when engine was running thinking I could postpone servicing the alternator a while, as it seemed to cope with demand. Stupid as I was, I assumed the coal in the regulator pack was worn out, and had ordered one already as a precaution. The car worked perfectly nice, but after I installed a radio and "testing it" properly, the demand probably deteriorated the alternator even more, as it now drops the voltage even faster. New rectifier pack + the risk of something else is broken I will not take as I need to outsource the installation (don't have a good garage), so I'll go for a new alternator. But, the rectifier is sold here: http://www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=RTF49560 if you need it. But that is only assuming the alternator is the original, so do check compatibility with them directly. Out of curiosity, what is your mileage gemeg? Torbjörn |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by Snoopy on Oct 20th, 2008, 10:35am One of the biggest problems for the alternator is the small amounts of power steering fluid that can drip from the supply pipe. its a know fault and is easily cured by tightening the clip on the reservoir . But it could be juts old age .. Torbjorn my old scorpio had the alternator fail at 46 k ( Miles) and that was down to fluid drip. |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by tlundkvi on Oct 20th, 2008, 11:37am Thanks for the advice, I will check that one also as soon as possible. Mine is driven 171000km, so this problem might be just age. Or possibly, the previous owner started the car with cables with a dead battery (there may be evidence this actually was the case, as the battery was replaced a few months before I bought it), which is known to kill rectifiers. |

Title: Re: Battery Light Post by gemeg22171 on Oct 20th, 2008, 11:50pm Been on to Trevor at FPUK, he says 100A not listed for V6 12 valve. Ford list 90A - part No.1406078. I'm confused....all the Refs on Simmo's link say 100A. Very expensive as well, might just live with it for a while. |
