Title: Battery draining
Post by trol on Oct 19th, 2008, 11:19pm
After not being used for two weeks, my battery is totally empty.
Is this a common thing with Scorpio's?

The car is a 12v, battery is new and the alternator puts out 14 volts.

Same thing happened to me last year - been away on holiday for 2 weeks, battery flat.
Remove battery, charge and refit - been fine ever since.

Thanks:)
I'll check the relay, what does it exactly do?

If there is something draining power i a short at the cig lighter or the glove compartment ligh being on or the bootlight etc, the car senses this and sends a signal to the relay which disconnects the power therfore avoiding the drain on the battery.  If this relay is duff it will need to be changed....

I reckon quick flat batteries only seem to occur when the cars are locked.

I agree. I left the Scorp (not the current one tho') unlocked for 6 weeks during the winter a couple of years back while in sunnier climates! Started 1st time and no battery issues at all, when you lock it I reckon all the security devises suck yer power! ;)

Amp draw on a locked car with PATS enable is a shade under 0.3A/H so that's 100 AH in two weeks - quite feasable to drain a battery in two weeks then.

BUT the power saver is supposed to switch everything off after 150 hours  so to save the battery.. Has the power save function gone AWOL?
If so then the battery would go flat.

It's a Dewa type 7 but I think it has died :-[
I's been empty two times, last week the locks wouldn't even open anymore.
I charged it, but the looking glass stays black....

As for the power saver, my remote fob stops working after some time ???

Best get a battery with screw tops so that you can check the electrolyte, then you always know where you are.

Well, my battery has survived, I charged it, left it out of the car for 6 weeks and it works fine ;D

Tha car still drains the battery, locked or unlocked.
Does the power saver also work when I leave the car  unlocked?

How many aH should an unlocked car use?

I had similar issues with the TD, if I pulled the power saver relay out and left the car, it didn't flatten the battery. A change of relay made no difference but the problem went away when I replaced the fusebox when I was trying to get the air con to work and it's been fine since.

Another common cause of battery drain is failure of the diode pack in the rectifier of the alternator - when it breaks down, it allows current to flow to earth through the alternator, and it has an annoying habit of seeming fine when the car is running.

Put a multimeter in series between the battery and the lead to the alternator - if the pack is working, there will be a miniscule or no current reading.

One of the heavy red cables will go directly to the alternator - its the main charging lead :)
