Title: Pre MOT frenzy
Post by mindofitsown on Dec 12th, 2008, 4:17pm
Took my M reg 2.0l 16v for MOT yesterday and it passed!!!  :)  My reason for being suprised is that lately it has been making a rattling sound around the cat and I thought it would fail emissions test.
Have got loads of 'advisory notices' however, including front brake flexis which were also notified last year!  ;D
Also last year I was advised that front brake discs were worn yet I've done nothing to them since and despite many more miles they didn't show up on the advisories ?  :o I really hate the subjectiveness of MOT testing.  >:(
Anyway, real reason for posting is about what happened half an hour before the test. I decided I ought to at least check the lights etc beforehand. Lo and behold one of the tail lights wasn't working in the boot cluster. Changed the bulb (really fiddley) and still no light. Changed again with known working bulb....still no light  ??? Decided to check boot wiring and found a kink in the loom just at the point where it exits the hinge arm (nearside). Unwrapped the outer tape and found two wires completed broken and all the others just hanging on by a thread.  :o (I had been wondering for months why the electric boot button had stopped working). Time was now very pressing. In my efforts to strip back the wires and wrap them together as a temporary fix, the fiddling had broken all but one of the other wires in the loom  :'( affecting the other lights which were hitherto working).  :-[ More botching and loads of electical tape later I just made it to the MOT on time.
Conclusion....my advice to all is check this area of the loom periodically as it seems to be a vulnerable spot. Its not really a case of chafing, more repeated flexing as the boot is opened/closed leading to fatigue.

You only need two tail lights for the test.As for all these advisories,it depends on the tester, some of them just have to invent a list or they are not happy. If your brakes have the required effort it doesn't matter if your discs are worn unless they are cracked or broken or very thin.I suppose your hoses look a bit weathered so he turns it into an advisory  ::)

Boot hinge loom and the loom under the side of the rear seat are a common problem, they are mentioned in the fault finder.

Yep, a common fault.

Frayed  wires in this  hinge area  can  fool the alarm system into thinking  someone has crowbarred open the locked boot,  leading to  much embrassment, swearing   and  shuffling of feet  when your Scorp alarm goes off at  04.15 am. :-*

We did once have some excellent photos of this problem but they were lost,I believe. when the computer crashed. If anyone encounters this problem and can post some photographs it would be a great help. As Stuart says it is a known problem and in the case I mention it was not apparent until the outer loom tape covering was removed as mentioned above. It is caused by continual contact with the boot hinge because the loom has not been secured far enough back to avoid this.  :)
