I bought my ultma a couple of weeks ago, and it only came with one key (and the programming one) I Know nothing about the key system on this, other than you have to program the key to start the car with the red key to make the car keywork correctly.

I'd like the wife to have a spare set of keys available, certainly when were on holiday or the like. I've managed to get another Key fob so I now just need to get the key and program it up.

My question is this. I can see no numbers or marking on the key so what do you do to order up a new key?

I know nothing about how these work, so when using the key in the door how does it turn the alarm off! ie does the prgraming of the key with the red one affect just the starting or does it affectively turn the alarm off as well.

Basically I know I can go to a dealer and ask the questions and get the key, but I'm not in any rush at present and probably won't have need to get the key (or the time) this side of the new year, so just thought I'd ask the question, and hopefully get the answer before then

Hi, All scorpio keys have a transponder chip in them, (the little red insert on the plastic part of the key). I got a replacement key cut at my local Timpsons, they stock the ford type blanks with transponder, (chip) and can read the existing key, its all to do with the depth of the cuts in it. Under the section about replacing the door lock on this site it shows you how to read your own key. Your owners handbook should have a section telling you how to programme a new key using your red key, if you dont have the handbook it can be downloaded from this site too. It only cost me £12 for the key and to have it cut, works perfectly too. Bikerdon.

Great, many thanks. I presume the keys were from FMD only seems thats not the case. What is not to clear from the above is are you saying the cutters also programmed the chip as well whilst cutting or did you have to do that afterwards yourself. As I said I'm in no real rush just want to ensure I have a working spare in the near future.

I have the manual, and the red key so doing myself is no problem but it sound a lot easier if you can just hand the key over, pay £12.00 quid and it all done for you. ;)

The detail about 'reading' the key is explained HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm). The key can be cut but YOU will need to programme it with the red key as you have read in the handbook. The procedure is very easy. ;)
