Title: Ford locking Wheel Nuts
Post by zero on Dec 21st, 2008, 10:19am
I've not had my ultima long, and the guy who had it before me only had it for a short while too

the car is fitted with locking wheel nuts, (bolts What ever) but I can't find the key to remove these.  I have check the car over and can't see this in the boot, side pockets etc so it looks like I'm going to have to get a new key if possable or remove them in someway myself.

I have a Ford box which sadly is empty, there are no ends on the box but there is a set of numbers on the front at the bottom right corner of the box is this a code I can use via a FMD to replace the key?

I've check with the past owner he doesn't have the key, and I'm going to give the car one more good look over and then try to resolve this some other way ie via the FMD or removal

Any help of replacement wheel keys, or easy ways to remove them would be gratefully recieved.

The box (and hopefully those fitted) say they are Ford parts

Cheers in advance

Dave

Hi dave,
I had same problem when I bought mine recently..Your best bet would go to tyre dealer, they most likely have a key for most locking wheels. Before you go, buy yourself a new set of locknuts and ask tyre dealer to fit for you. ;)

If you go to a FMD they should be able to supply a replacement 'key' once they have looked at the particular type of locking nut. Failing that most major tyre companies have the means to remove them. There are also sets available from motor factors for DIY use. Depending on the type of unit sometimes an old socket hammered on will be sufficient to undo the nut.  :)

best way is to smash them off and get a new set i remember ford wont sell just a key they sell you the whole set. that is what i was told. locking wheel nuts are a pain to get off it is not for the light hearted, we struggle at work getting them off. there are various tools ie a big hammer, punches, sockets, left hand threaded sockets. best to go to a local tyre place and see if they can remove them.

we have a navara that had lost the key and it took 6hrs to get them off

I can recommend reverse thread sockets. Had the same on a previous car, try not to damage the wheel or compromise the nut's integrity or you'll never get it off!

I always get by with a hammer and chisel  ;D

the ones with the free moving ring round the outside, just needs the ring removed then you can usually unscrew them with the chisel

On the outside of the Locking wheel nut there is a small letter stamped.. if you go to your local FMD he should be able to supply a key that fits that letter/number . He might need to see some proof of ownership as well .
