Title: help coil pack?
Post by matt1987 on Dec 29th, 2008, 10:29pm
hi

when to get in the car tonight started fine idle fines drives no good. the car ran fine yesterday and has never been trouble.

i have check the autobox oil and have scanned the car and no dtc recorded. also checked for leaks.

me and my dad are lead to belive it is coil packs as it is a common problem on the 2.3. it has already had a set before.

ok when the car is put in drive or reverse and you release the brake the car moves off slowly, apply load to the car and it bangs and juddereds (whole car shakes and moves very slowly like inches then stops) like a miss fire release the load and all is ok place it in neutral or park and it revs fine, idle is fine to, it feels like a failing coil pack under load ie drive or reverse. checked the mass sensor. the other week and all was well.

im going to check the wiring tomorrow under the cover as my tools are at work.

anyone else had a similar problem?

many thanks matt

ps i maybe looking to purchase some coil packs if some has some (highlander)

Matt

There is an issue with the autobox that can cause the engine to run on 2 cylinders it was posted by Dave2302 (an autobox specialist).

With my 2.3 it only occurs if I start off in reverse with a really cold engine (stood overnight with temperature around zero or less). If I turn the engine off and wait a few minutes it's fine.

Dave2302 if you happen to read this, last time it happened I had the following codes (not had codes before):
P1701 reverse engagement error
P1749 pressure control solenoid A failed low
P1270 Engine RPM or vehicle speed limiter reached

Same issue with mine  ::). As far as I know it is problem with an autobox solenoid that doesn't really like the cold & tends to stick. I thought about replacing it, but really couldn't be bothered to remove the autobox & dismantle it  ;)....I've lived with it for 2 years & 60Kmiles & it's never got any worse. It's fine in the summer though  :)

With mine though, if I turn off the engine straight away then restart it, it is usually okay. Sometimes it takes a couple of restarts though.

Do you get very strong smell of petrol as well when this happens ?....I do  ::), but doesn't everyone like the smell of petrol ?  ;D
