Have you removed the aircon compressor to give access to the stat ? If so use a blunt screwdriver or similar and carefully prise around it until it loosens.If you are careful it will not split unless it is rotten,and then it will need to be replaced anyway,if you could get one !

as gozz says compressor has to go it's the only way
