Title: auto gearbox top up
Post by freddieboy on Jan 17th, 2009, 3:46pm
I notice from my manual that the auto gearbox is supposed to be checked and topped up by a Ford Dealer.  Just checking if its possible to do it myself, or is there any reason why a dealer has to do it, (other than financial reasons)   Thanks lads.

To check the auto box, . Get the car HOT after a good run is best ( oil should be HOT) and then park on level ground, shift through all gears once or twice then put into PARK .. Lift bonnets and take out the dip stick for the gear box ( at back of engine bat and I seem to recall its black and about a metre long , give it a wipe on lint free cloth , re insert and remove.. Oil level should be within the marks. If not add fluid through the dipstick tube.. . Also check the colour and smell of the fluid .. it should be pinkish /reddish in colour and not smell Burnt .. If it is there is a possible g/box problem .

Pete B. I do not think the manual version has a dip stick , On manual gar boxes there is usually a plug on the side of the box used as a filler / level check. If you unscrew it oil should just drip out if its at the correct level , and you top up through the same orifice!

Have a look at THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/mt75.htm) item 7 in the picture is the plug referred to and its also referred to in the figures along with the quantity of oil .

Don't forget when checking Auto Fluid level that as well as being in Park with transmission hot you must have the engine running or you'll not get the right reading.  Without the engine running the level shows higher than it actually is, potentially fatal for the poor old gearbox  ;)
