Title: Possibly The End!!
Post by PeteB on Jan 18th, 2009, 7:02pm
Well yesterday someone reversed into my drivers side wing and have crumpled it well  :( you can imagine how peeved  I am especially as I have recently fitted two new fuse boxes :(

As my scorp is an M reg with 185k on the clock do you reckon that the insurere will try to write her off ?

Yes! but you could buy it back and have a new wing fitted at your expense and put it back on the road, the process is really quite painless. ost to but it back should not be very much as they class it as scrap and thats rock bottom ATM ....
Thats what I would do, IF I had the space .

Doesn't look too bad.
I'd have a go at fixing it myself.
If you've done fuse boxes, a new wing should be a breeze  ;D
Good luck & keep us all posted.

I would try to get the damages to the car as a cash settlement. But do that before repairing it and after you know parts prices. They should agree as long as it's way less than the value of the car. Will probably be cheaper and easier for the insurance company than  compensating the car, you buy it back etc.

Well the insurer has been in touch and I'm waiting for someone to come out and take a look, he did say it would probably be written off.

If i did buy her back how do i go about getting her back on the road ? does she need to have a new mot etc ?

Pete, I think you'll find that there are 'categories' of 'write off'. If it is merely uneconomical as opposed to major structural then it is a straightforward repair job. IF it goes beyond that to a major re-build it would be subject to a full inspection before being allowed back on the road and to ensure that it was not a 'ringer'. Beyond that it would be classed at a Total Loss and for destruction only. That's as I understand the system.
UPDATE. Just found THIS (http://www.mycarcheck.com/help/accidentdamage/) which may help. ;)

Pete,
If it is just the wing I can't believe it would need a test.
Insurance company will probably be more than happy to give you a cash payment so you can repair the car yourself or arrange your own repairs.
The car has a fairly low value anyway and with the low value of scrap it may even cost them to get it collected and disposed of.

If it is Cat " C" then you do have to have a re test .... BUT if they give you a cash settlement and you repair it yourself then you do not . Its on the Government site(s) somewhere as things are changing al the time .

Just had the 3rd partys insurer on the phone who want to deal with the claim, yet I have already begun proceedings with my own who will recoup losses from the 3rd party. However apparently by claiming through my own it will effect my premium next year, am I better leaving it with my own to sort it or use the other parties insurer  ???

Sorry but am i missing something here? If we are talking of write offs and retests, surely it cant cost that much to have wing nocked out and resprayed? Or even rplaced without insurance company being involved, maybe i am missing the point

hi there

£80+VAT for a new wing (if required)
£100+VAT for paint
£100+VAT for labour

that's over £300 for a car valued at £300-£500. :-/

that's why all scorpio's will be wrote off in a crash, imo.

Aye they told me anything that costs over 60% value of the car to repair makes it a write off :(

Well I'm surprised the insurer are paying for the repairs! The repair centre told me that it was only 80% and above the value its a write off so looks like shes here to stay :)
