Title: New to the forum
Post by Hovis on Jan 30th, 2009, 2:14pm
Hello one and all. My names Mark and I'm not yet the owner of a Scorpio but it's possibly only a matter of time.

I'll attempt to cut a long story short......

For the past 3 years myself and a friend have taken part in a banger rally, Staples 2 Naples. (http://www.staples2naples.com) If you aren’t going to look at the link the 2 most important rules are a) Car must be N reg or older and b) cost less than £150 (its historically £100 but last year some people struggles because of the price of scrap) but I'm sticking to the £100. Its been fantastic fun and for a good cause. Our team is called Grassy Ass and we've always caused a stir with our cars. Last year we took a mk2 transit done like the A-Team, it actually died in Switzerland on the first day :-( The year before we took a car and caravan combo and the year before that 2 BMW e30 318i's covered in Astroturf! As yet there have been no Scorpios, Jags and big Volvos a plenty but not one Scorpio.

Anyway, this year I've seen a Scorpio looking rather sorry for it's self at a friends garage which i can have for £100! Paint is awful, Some one has sprayed the bumpers with a can........badly and it has 3 different types of wheel on it!!! He said it was diesel but it has a 2.3 badge on the boot lid and having looked in to them a bit more I have only found 2.5 diesels did they do a 2.3? Its looks very comfy, cruise control, full electrics etc and its a manual which is great! My biggest questions are what am I getting myself into if I use a Scorpio and what do I need to look out for before I give him any cash!

If we get it then it will become the Robocop car!

I hope I haven't rabbited too much and I'm looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions.

Mark

Mark, All you need to know about the car and its variants is on This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/about.htm) or one of the 'buttons' on the left. The diesel is 2.5. Sounds like the boot lid may have been swopped. You'd get more than £100 if you sold off the parts I guess so there doesn't seem much to lose and I doub't you'd be any worse off than on previous occasions !! ::). I'm sure there would be a good deal of interest in your venture from the members on here. Good luck. :)

Oh a 2.5, that’s better. How useful is that page! Looking at the info I’ve only got 83bhp/t which is a shame as a friend is taking a cavalier TD and he’s up around 90, but I suppose I have the advantage of rear wheel drive! And I’m sure the Scorpio is more comfortable.

I haven’t found any horror stories and I’m hoping that’s because there aren’t any but is there any major common fault that can’t be fixed with a goodly amount of gaffa tape, zip ties and a whole lot of hope!! One year a couple of lads fixed a blown radiator hose in the middle of the Alps with Parma ham, Gummi bears, a plastic bag and shoe laces and it held for over 500 miles…..that really is 100% truth, they won an award from the organisers for the best bodge!!

Thanks very much Scorpio_Mike

What’s this "luck" thing you speak of.......German style precision and planning all the way....that’s why we were changing the engine in the transit 2 whole days before we left!! And our first test run was over 200 miles......on the way to the ferry in Dover!!

Hi Mike, thanks for that. I didn't get down to my mates to pick the beast up. Haven't got anywhere to put it is the biggest reason. Far to big to put in my garages! I need to get rid of a couple things really.......so if you know anyone who wants a 1995 Volvo 440 SE or 1.6i 205 GTi both with 12 months MOT let me know!

I'm going to pick it up this weekend hopefully. Woo Hoo!!

Don't worry about what the bhp rating is, once that turbo kicks in you'll start flying  ;).... :)

Now is that a sarcastic "flying" or do they go well? I have a friend who chips cars, same as Superchips but alot cheaper and in most cases for more power!! He reckons, depending on the type of ECU, he should be able get about 145/155bhp out of it, dont think I'm going to get to the magical 200bhp/t any time soon but its a start!!

Its all sorted now too, I'm going to collect it on Saturday! Woo Hoo!! Can't wait!  ;D

There are a few things I'm going to need for it I'm sure, any places good/bad for second hand parts?

I'm  absolutely appalled at the thought of  a  Scorpio  being  used  in  such  a   down-market,  oafish  Top Gear  type   silly-arsed   jaunt.

Is nothing sacred ?   ::)

Can't you find a vulgar   Astra  or  Omega  to  take  part in your  silly  stunt  ?

That Clarkson has a lot to answer for.

Two-eyed English Idiot.  :P

A knocker!!!! How very dare you cast such aspersions on my Scorpio!!! I've never been so offended.....that said it could be true as I've never heard it running or driven it!!

Clarkson has got nothing to answer for in relation to this......he gets paid a lot of money to do what he does for our entertainment. In contrast this costs me a lot of money to do for charity. I'm not saying it isn't great fun because it is!! We normally cover about 3500 miles and see/do brilliant things you'd never normally see/do.

To be brutally honest the car I am buying is fit for the scrap yard, we aren't talking an immaculate Cossie but an absolute heap of sh*t. Would you rather it goes to the scrap yard or it is used for the good of cancer and, this year, Alzheimer sufferers?
