Title: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Moonchalk on Jan 31st, 2009, 1:21pm Just taken delivery of a brand new leather steering wheel after rare opportunity to buy at a good price. Keen to get it fitted, but was wondering if it really is neccessary to get the car up on ramps and remove the clamp plate bolt as described here (step 3): http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/steering/SteeringWHeel.pdf Anybody tried it without doing above? Thanks MC :) |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Tompion on Jan 31st, 2009, 1:29pm No need to remove the clamp plate bolt, just make sure you disconnect the battery and wait before starting the job as described in the warning. The airbag plug can go on either way round, but one way it can get levered off when you use the horn, so note which way round it is. |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by adam on Jan 31st, 2009, 9:28pm Moonchalk or Tompion, do you know what type and tool size is needed to remove the airbag from the steering wheel. Is it a Torx? I have tried to see with a mirror but to no avail. Thanks |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Moonchalk on Jan 31st, 2009, 10:38pm It is torx. Two screws. Will check size tmrw. Mc |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Tompion on Feb 1st, 2009, 12:24am It's T30 the screws stay encapsulated in the wheel. There are six holes in the back of the wheel, it's the 2 just below the horizontal centre line you want, you'll probably have to turn the wheel to get at them. |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Simmo on Feb 1st, 2009, 7:53am Tompion is correct....of course.... ;D. To access the screws you need to turn the wheel as he says so the screws are accessible from the side of the column. You would do well to just raise the front of the car slightly so as to take the weight off the front wheels or you will be straining the power steering rack and they do not like that. ;) |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by adam on Feb 1st, 2009, 4:11pm Simmo, thanks for the great advice. Torx 30 it is. Removed and all finished just before the snow begins to settle. :) |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Moonchalk on Feb 1st, 2009, 5:57pm Would this be safe ... - Unscrew, but don't disconnect airbag, so as to avoid straining rack as per Simmo, but without having to raise vehicle. - Then disconnect battery, wait etc. - Then disconnect airbag etc etc ... - Reverse for refit. ??? Thanks. MC |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by adam on Feb 1st, 2009, 6:08pm I see what you mean Moonchalk but i wouldn't recommend it. It only takes a few minutes to lift the front wheels off the ground. I did it this morning with the front wheels lifted. Better safe than sorry. If it's worth doing it's worth doing right and safely. |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Moonchalk on Feb 1st, 2009, 6:13pm Except that only having 1 jack makes lifting both wheels difficult ! MC |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by adam on Feb 1st, 2009, 6:46pm Where are you based. I have a spare side jack if you need it. I used a trolley jack as i wasn't going under the car. Are you able to use a neighbours or relatives jack. |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by Tompion on Feb 1st, 2009, 6:57pm I'll answer for Simmo ;D he often suggests parking with the wheels on newspapers so the wheels turn easier. |

So do I BUT if you have a pair of axle stands you can lift one side, place a stand under, and then lift the other side and lower it on to an axle stand. You should NEVER work on a car just supported on the jack. There are members on here who have had narrow escapes when the jack has slipped or given way and they are not looking to repeat the exercise!!. :o Tompion is right in that another method is to place the wheels on a magazine or gravel in fact anything which allows the wheels to turn without undue strain on the rack. Wet grass, mud etc has all been used. |

Title: Re: Steering Wheel Remove\Replace Post by gozz on Feb 1st, 2009, 8:56pm Further to Simmo's post re parking on a magazine,I have four pieces of thin steel plate 6" square with grease in between each pair,it,s very effective. GOZZ. |
