Title: Re: Self Dipping Mirror Post by Jonnycab on Mar 6th, 2009, 2:05am How long does a lifetime guarantee last ?...depends on what the life expectancy of that product is ;) Here's an interesting passage I found which explains it & how manufacturers manage to get away with such bold claims..... "When looking at the fine print of the average guarantee, it quickly becomes evident that the lifetime under consideration is the number of years that the product is reasonably expected to last. This time frame is usually determined by field research conducted by the manufacturer. Research on the product will take into account such factors as average frequency of usage, the length of time that the materials used to create the product are expected to last, and whether or not the product has seen more use than is deemed to be acceptable" So it would seem that these dimming mirrors have now gone beyond their lifetime expectancy set by the manufacturer & therefore they are no longer obliged to provide a free replacement :) |

Title: Re: Self Dipping Mirror Post by Snoopy on Mar 6th, 2009, 7:29am With regards the " Lifetime guarantee" From the information I have . It would seem that MOST manufacturers think 10 years is " normal " and considered sufficient time for things to work with out breaking or stop functioning. Donnelly replaced the mirror in my car along with several others to my knowledge BEFORE they got to 10 years old but after that they stopped, and it was described as a " Goodwill gesture" so obviously discretionary. You have to remember that these cars are ALL over 10 years old now. You could try writing to Magna Donnelly in the USA and inquire at what cost they will supply one for you , but I think you will be suprised at the actual cost + import duty, its expensive . The same mirror is I understand fitted to the new Jaguar! |
