Title: Rear Wheel wobble
Post by nice_1 on Mar 20th, 2009, 1:08pm
Noticed a strange noise today whilst driving. When I got home to check, I jacked the car up I found i could rock the rear wheel from side...Ah, wheel bearing I thought. I removed the wheel to find this was not the case.  The whole assembly was moving, this movement being transfered through to the driveshaft. So i was wiggling the driveshaft as well. :-[

I don't have time at the moment to delve deeper, thought I would see what the you guys think is happening. Its a 24v estate by the way, I assume the rear axle set up is common to all scorps??

Your wheel bearings appear to have collapsed,it is only they which hold the wheels in the correct plane, the stub shaft is bolted solid through the bearings and if you can wiggle it the bearinngs are shot.

Thanks for that info GOZZ. As I said not had time to investigate fully, probably won't get a chance until sunday. So from what you've said I guess its not the end of the world then...... Or is it?

Never say die ! the bearing kit from a factor is about £30,hub from Ford thick end of £100 (they are not often reusable),and if the bearing housing is gouged you will find a good secondhand one, these are not always damaged.
