Title: Surging & overfuelling
Post by Tons_of_fun on Apr 6th, 2009, 8:47am
Hi all. Having a spot of bother with the cossie... Under part load the car surges slightly & i have a noticable amount of soot in the exhaust  :o. It starts & ticks over fine & is great under full throttle. I have noticed the coil pack is looking a little sorry for itself (insulation breaking up) so will change that as soon as Matt has dug one out for me (cheers matt  ;)). Have also noticed a blow fron the o/s side of engine. May be un related as it sounds like the downpipe leaking  ::). any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...Craig  :)

Seemed fine on the drive home tonight...strange  ::). Just wondering before i start pulling the old gal apart, would a dirty M A F cause "overfuelling & surging " symptoms ? Thanks...craig :)

Craig, It is certainly a major feature in the cars running. If the 'wrong' signals are being sent to the various sensors because the MAF is not clean then all sorts of weird things can occur. It is a simple job to clean it with carb cleaner and certainly worth a try.  The details of its function and cleaning are HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm). ;)

Thanks for that Simmo. Reading that write up has also explained a few more of the cossies "little moments". Will clean the MAF when the boss goes for lunch  ::) ::). Will keep you informed... Thanks again...Craig  :)

'blow on o/s of engine' that will be effecting lambda operation, ecm will continually try to adapt, check fuel trims.
check for vac leaks under inlet manifold (the 'T' piece) EGR is another common place on that engine.

Thanks for the advice chaps. Cleaning the M A F seems to have done the trick. Gear changes are now a LOT smoother as well  :). Think i might have a scan done & see what else needs doing  ::). Once again thanks for the help. I can feel a donation coming on after pay day.  ;)
