Title: New ignition key and lock without programming
Post by trol on Apr 14th, 2009, 8:52pm
My Scorpio came with only one black key.
I had the chance to buy an "almost" new lock and key set.
I put all the locks in and tried to start with the new key, off couse it didn't...

Now comes the funny part :D
I carefully cut the red dot out of the old black key, took the chip out and put it in my new red master key from the lock set.
Guess what, the car starts ;D
Then I programmed all the other keys with the "new" master key and the car starts fine with all of them ;D ;D

What age is your Scorpio? The later ones didnt have the red key, you may have had one of these.
what you could have done was just remove the metal part of the old key and glue in one of the new ones ;)

My Scorp was built in december 1994 so it should have a red key.

The strange thing to me is that I can get a red key from another car, insert the chip from my own black key and use that red key to program all my other keys.
I didn't think the programming would work.

Anyway, I just saved 60 euros at the Ford dealer  :D

Maybe it has been reprogrammed before?

Anyway good news! :)

if this black key you got with your car wasn't original it's most likely it was programmed/reprogrammed by the keycutter with one of these machines that programmes all keys as master keys. Don't know how it works exactly but read somewhere that there are certain types of those programming machines that literally clone the master key, so that you may have 3 black keys acting as masters.

It's an original Ford key, it could be the previous owner bought a new master key at Ford and they were out of red ones :)
