Title: Main beam and fog lights not working
Post by tonyboy on Apr 21st, 2009, 8:13pm
Hello all when i first got my Scorpio the owner had told me that the main beam dosn't work because of the relay. So i changed the relay, but still no main beam. So i asked an auto electrician to have a look, he said it was the fuse box, so i changed the fuse box . Still same problem. checked the continuity of the loom that was ok. Changed the switch still no main beam. Put a bridge between the fuse for the main beam directly to the bulb and that worked, but the little lights for the fog lights on the switch stayed on even when the ignition and the light switch was off .
Any suggestions welcome.
I know how clever the members are at sorting problems out.
Cheers

The first thing to check is the large connector to the main fusebox. This MUST locate correctly. There are two pegs on the connector which MUST be located in the corresponding lugs on the side of the box BEFORE it is pushed home. IF they are not the connector will go down, apparently correctly, BUT in fact one row of pins out, and that' ;)s when you get all sorts of problems, including the ones you have.

Hello. Just checked my connector and made sure that the lugs lined up. But still no joy

you've changed the fusebox ok but is it any good? instead of buying another used one you should have rebuilt the original ... the one you bought is probably in a similar condition then the one you had already.

anyway if changing the fusebox didn't help and the connections are ok check all the wiring if it's OK...

Hello ive just had a look at the back of the switch and it looks as if  that pin 15 has a bit of melting around the base of the pin. Havn't looked at the multiplug yet as it's too dark i'll look at that tomorrow

Was it the light switch you changed?

Just had a look at the loom where the multiplug is by the fuse box and found that there was some newish tape around the loom. Took the tape off and found that the Violet and orange wire has been snipped and joined to a green wire then joined on to another wire which goes to fuse 5. And another green wire has been pluged into fuse 15.
Any Clues .

there probably was a short-circuit of some sort and somebody tried to bypass it... it was probably caused by a faulty fusebox. fix the wiring, see what happens check the fuses and if it doesn't work and it for example keeps blowing the fuse, then you've got a fusebox rebuilt ahead of you...

Not EVERYONES fusebox needs replacing!!  }{

the two fuses you mentioned are both lights, 5 is left hand dip beam and 15 rear foglights so obviously someones tried to bypass the problem.

If you remove the fuses and leave the wires in place do those systems still work?

naaaa!{} wait! i wrote that if he can't get it sorted by fixing the wiring etc. and it keeps for example blowing the fuse, then he needs a fusebox rebuild :P   8)

Hiya just taken the fuses out and its exactly the same . except for fuse 15 the rear fog lights go out. Fuse 5 might as well not be there coz theres no difference whether the fuse is in or out

im still thinking light switch or loom, can you take the lower panel off below the light switch, the one with the coin box and bonnet release?

Have a look at the loom, you might find someones used the permanent live to wire something in and the looms been damaged.

I did have a look at the light switch multiplug and the socket that goes into pin 15 of the switch did have a bit of a burn mark in it

Tony, this is a known problem and recently I lost all obligatory lights. That was traced to the switch, where pin 15 was burnt, and replacing it cured the problem. I see you've done that but the clue is the wiring to pin 15 I would suggest.

Thanks i,ll have a look see if there's continuity between the switch multiplug and the fuse.
P.S. do you which pin in the  fuse box multiplug is for the mainbeam

I looked at the loom behind the coin box , and low and behold there was some new insulation tape wraped around the loom with a fuse popping out. didn,t have a proper look, but wondering if it's for the aftermarket alarm thats fitted. P.S. taken woj's advice and rebuilt my old fuse box ( just in case )

I take it it wasn't a method of by-passing a burnt out 'pin' in the connector block then?

Well using the same logic its also advisable to rebuild your engine, you just never know ;)

ok chappies no arguing :) i don't think i'll rebuild the engine cos i havn't got a clue when it comes to mechanics. but rebuilding the fusebox was very relaxing, no kids no dogs and no wife, all peace and quite. Much easyer that what i thought, took loads of pics . Pretty straight forward when i got my head roung it. Anyway i'll check that loom tomorrow and see whats happening.

At my wits end now, iv'e got power going to the fuse box, there's continuity from the multi pin plug to the lights, looks like i'll have to spend some money and take it to the garage. Was wondering if there is a common wire for the lights ( it's just the front lights that are not working ) or if there is an earth connection for the lights  at the front,  and there's a bad earth connection  ???
