Title: RAC or The AA?
Post by wojtekor on May 3rd, 2009, 3:06am
I'm thinking about buying myself a breakdown cover and right now I'm a bit stuck... RAC or The AA? which one is better? which one, not necessarily one of these 2,  is best?
RAC seems to be cheaper but I'm afraid that i may regret signing a contract with them, after all even Top Gear uses The AA... ;) there must be a reason for that...
Any thoughts?

Defo the AA, as they cover you as a person, no matter what car you are in. The RAC only cover the car that is registered to you.

The AA are alot quicker....I've had AA cover for the last 12 years & never had a problem. Last time I called them they arrived in 20 minutes & the longest I've ever waited is an hour. A mate who is with the RAC recently waited 4 hours for them to turn up & the best time he ever got was about 1 1/2 hours  :)

hmmm.... with 25% off at the AA it's £21.64 a month for a full joint cover... and if the difference is as significant as you say it's definitely worth spending 5£ more a month... will give it a go i suppose....

ps. Jonny go get some sleep, god d**n it...  ;D

I pay the AA £130 a year for me & the wife for roadside & relay. I don't have homestart...never really needed it as I can usually fix it myself  :)

You people have too much money!!  }{

Obviously the credit crunch hasnt reached Scorpio owners yet ;)

I'm with autoaid £37 PER YEAR

That covers me as a driver or passenger in ANY car for breakdown AND/OR relay within the UK

It only covers cars and bikes, not larger Transit sized vans.

They use local recovery companies and the twice i've used it have been picked up in under an hour.

The only "downside" is that you pay for the recovery then have to claim it back from Autoaid, which they do no problem, they make their money on the large number of people who dont claim it back :)

Have been with the AA since 97 & have never had a problem  :). Always get to me fast & have always got me going again. That said though i have only ever called them out 5 times in the last 12 years  ::). No not lucky...always have a boot full of tools & spares  :o. Well it is a scorpio  ;D ;D ;D

I'm with the RAC and they do cover you not your car, so whatever car you are in you will be covered. They are also very good, and have always fixed the car on the road when i have used them, but thats not to say the AA arnt any good, they should both be just as good as each other, i would go with who ever gives you the cheapest deal.

Certain bank accounts give you free membership deals with the RAC, in my case I only found out when a personal banker queried a standing order payment. I now use a separate 0800 number but get full and normal service   ;D

i believe that one of the banks i use does that too but requires me to upgrade my account to a higher level and pay something like 15£ a month for it, so there's no difference...

Fair point, in my case the bank fee is less than the full RAC with European annual fee so I either get banking of RAC for free.
