Title: Are these tyres the wrong size?
Post by tricky_dicky on May 6th, 2009, 10:01am
Could anybody tell me if these tyres are the wrong size for my Ultima 2.3 saloon, it has the 12 spoke soft-effect alloys fitted with 225/55/v16. Shouldn't they be either 205/55 or 225/50 ? Will it matter if I leave these tyres on it as they have thousands of miles left in them? The tyres seem very close to the wheel arches which I thought was just saggy worn out springs (I ordered some heavy duty springs to sort the ride hieght out) now i'm confused ???

55 profiles arent listed for the Scorpio but they should be fine, your 55 tyre diameter is only around 2cm larger than the 50 profiles so 1cm nearer the wheel arch.

You're speedo will be reading about 3% slower than normal so bearing in mind Scorpio speedos can read 10% over you probably have one of the most accurate speedos out there ;)

Might be worth double checking with your insurance company, it can invalidate insurance if you are not using manufacturer recommended tyre sizes.

Shouldnt be a problem though i wouldnt think.

Thanks Highlander, I am going to be changing the rear springs to heavy duty ones which lift the back up by about half an inch according to johnnycab so they should be alright. I dont want to bin 4 nearly new tyres.
I'd better check the size of the spare as well I suppose.

Hi tricky, I think you miss-understood what I said. The heavy duty springs I fitted lifted the rear by almost 2 inches initially, but once they settled down it dropped by about half an inch. So the car still sits about an inch & a half higher than it originally did........I hope this makes sense  :)

Well, you know what they say - never buy cheap rubber as a blowout at high speed could be costly.......  ;D

I use du..............nlop  :P

On a more serious note.. :D

Use this to work out your sizes - its quite natty ;) - remember tyre manafacturers reccomend no more that +3/-5 % from stock size (although as highlander says, the scorp speedo is invariably -10% out anyway lol )

Must admit... the thought of some 225/30/20's on my scorp does appeal...... 8)

Thanks I had a look and there is quite a difference in size in the two tyres. Think I might have to change the tyres.
