Title: Petrol Tank Leak ?
Post by Nunnspoet on May 11th, 2009, 11:33am
On my Scorp I call the Scrapper I suspected a Petrol Tank leak (smell).  I investigated finding some evidence of staining around the Petrol Tank and could not find any evidence of leakage anywhere else.  I decided to tackle this job when the weather improved and kept the Tank with only 20gbp's worth of fuel in, putting up with the smell.

Last week I decided to check the Bty. charge on the dash reset button without starting up.  Within seconds the smell of Petrol was very strong.  I switched off and looked under the car.  Petrol dripping rapidly onto the Exhaust Pipe  :o :o.

Somebody had replaced the Fuel Filter by cutting the Fuel lines to and from the old Filter and replacing them with black externally braided flexible pipe which had rotted from the inside allowing Petrol to soak into the braiding where it was not readilly aparrent to the eye untill it was dripping directly onto the Exhaust Pipe.  Not only that but the cheap, gappy Jubilee Clips that were used to secure the pipe had almost rusted through.

Pretty dangerouse or what!

I have now remedied this situation using propper Flexible Fuel Pipe and good Jubilee Clips.

Please take note and be very carefull when dealling with Petrol issued folks.  I know that I/we have had a very lucky escape.

Yes it could .

I thought it wise to put this on here as the "Quick release" joints on the Scorpio range of cars are almost impossible to undo without the Ford tool which I believe is not available  >:(  >:(.

Which means that a simple item to replace becomes a real challenge and  as not everybody is aware of the dangers in not using the correct flexible fuel lines etc. dreadfull accidents are just waiting to happen.
