Just wondering what you guys would do in my position.
1. Drove my car to work the other day (rare occurence) and thought as I had it nice and warmed up I would check the ATF. Guess what? Brown and gritty and stinking are the words I have to use. So....... gearbox swap needed in the maybe not so distant future.

2. M'lady borrowed it last week while her's was MOT'd and she says it cut out while stopped at a roundabout but started again straight away, but then when she got in it to leave work it wouldn't start (wouldn't even turn over), left it a couple of mins and then it struggled into life.
I noticed after that the trip computer and odometer's trip counter appeared to have been reset so suspect possible new battery required.

3. Car has rust on sills, idles not smooth enough most of the time and steering wheel has a mind of its own when braking.

So, my question is this? Is it worth doing up or should I just go and buy a Prius :o

Depends on what your expectations are... I own a Scorpio because I love this model, always have. Spent a looooot on it and for half of what I've spent I could get a fairly bullet-proof Japanese car and much younger.
But I LOVE the Scorp and plan to keep it as a 3rd car in the household.
So my answer to your dilemma would be: fix it and keep it

If you need a bullet-proof runner that requires minimum maintenance then it's obviously not the Scorpio you want...

To answer the question, No its not worth doing up, from a strictly financial viewpoint I dont think any Scorpio is worth spending a lot of cash on, they are worth very little.

I certainly couldnt justify the cost of getting a garage to replace your gearbox.
If you can do it yourself or have someone do it cheaply for you that would be different.

However yours being the 12v shouldnt be too difficult to sort on the electrical side, possibly just a battery as you say, idle and steering under braking shouldnt be to bad to sort out either..

Your decision :)
