Hi,

Is it safe to top up the 24V gearbox with Dexron III grade oil instead of the Dexron II? Many sources on the internet seems to suggest it is 100% safe. Since a few liters will not come out of the TC anyway, unless patience is heavily excercised, has anyone noticed any problems with doing an oilchange using Dexron III?

And to the other question, how long does it take for most of the oil to drain (the answer is probably "as long as you want to wait"? And how long can i expect it to take with an appropriate funnel to top it up from empty? My concern is that I would like to do this during a single day, and I'd rather not leave it overnight.

Looks like changing the ATF + filter and gasket oneself will be cheaper than a tank of fuel :)

Hi

Dont know about Dexron II / 111 mix, I used Comma AQ202.

Start to finish job took me less than three hours and I am a novice!!

I think it should have Dexron III in it already.
You won't get it all to drain out no matter how long you wait.
It’s a lot easier if you draw the fluid out through the filler tube first.
It doesn't take long to fill in spite of the narrow filler.

Put back the same amount as you take out (assuming you haven't spilled it all over the forecourt), & top up once hot if required using the procedure on the site.

Perhaps they didn’t use a small enough pipe, I think I used a 6mm dia pipe. It tends to catch where the filler tube joins the box. You should be able to get the pipe to the bottom of the sump. Make a mark on the tube that is about (guessing here) 100mm/4 inches longer than the dipstick so you know it’s gone in far enough (possibly cut the tube at an angle to stop it sealing on the bottom of the sump).
I used a cheap drill driven pump, but it was a bit troublesome getting it to prime, it wouldn’t lift the fluid unless it was hot.

There isn’t a drain plug.

I've always wondered if it was possible to take more out of the box by this method. ???

I found that having dropped the pan on the Scorp and only getting a fraction of the total amount out in addition to also having attempted a change on a Astra automatic that I have which despite having a drain plug only relinquished 2Ltrs of a capacity of 7Ltr this all made me seriously wonder if the use of a professional suction pump down the dipstick more may be achievable. ???
(Something though tells me it won't)

In fact one day I might even get around to telling you the conclusion to this as in fact I've already bought said equipment some time ago but have only just recently bought a decent compressor in order to use it and this still requires to be plumbed and wired in. :-[
