Title: starter motor/solenoid - where to buy?
Post by sgt_pepper on Jun 9th, 2009, 5:25pm
Hello All,
My 1998 Ultima 2.3 Auto just started fast clicking when I went to start it, I charged the battery, but the problem remained. I have now removed the starter motor/solenoid. The number on the motor is      0 001 108 155, but I can`t find a replacement s/h or new on the net. Can anyone point me in the right direction........... I might only need the solenoid!      Thanks all. :(

I have a 2nd hand one but I think it sounds more like you have a battery problem.
have you tried you starter on another battery?

Hi Dave, I could have been interested in the motor, but I don`t know whether the different part numbers make a difference! Unless you know different! Thanks.

dont think so, i'm pretty sure the 16v's all use the same one, there might be a difference between auto and manuals? anyone know?

EDIT : they are the same I have both here :)

Sgt Pepper, I still think you have a battery problem, Scorpios are weird when it comes to batteries..

Try another one on the car before you go buying a starter motor... just to keep me happy :)

Highlander, I don`t think I could face putting the starter motor back on again, It took me all morning to get it off, And it made me feel really sick, rolling around on my back under the car, and as I said, firstly I charged it, then I tried to start it with my other car also connected via jump leads! This battery has been perfectly fine and normally starts the car first touch, but when I went to start it yesterday, it just fast clicked! Thanks.

Yep I saw that,  I have done it dozens of times, you can stick heavy duty jump leads on it and try jumping it from a large heavy duty battery and it wont make any difference.

BUT if you take your battery off and replace it with a good one it fires up straight away.. The Scorpio is the only car I've ever seen that does this, not every time but its common

I didnt mean put the starter back on, you can test it while its removed with your jump leads (be careful)

Hi Stuart, I tested the starter with the jump leads from my other car and the solenoid is throwing the cog forward ok when I go from earth to the relay, but when I put the current from earth to live The motor does not turn, is that u/s or am I missing something? perhaps I am not testing it properly? Advice appreciated.........  Thanks

PS I also went from (earth, one lead) to (solenoid+live, other lead) but motor still wouldn`t turn.

Hi-yall,
Now I understand how to test my starter properly, I tested it and found it to be working as Highlander expected. So I guess it`s starter back on, and try another battery! *Wish the faultfinder page on this site hadn`t pointed me in the wrong direction* (perhaps it should be written clearer, for this particular fault!)      I`ll let you know how I get on!! Thanks.  :-/

Actually the fault finder DID point you in the right direction by suggesting checking the battery FIRST,  you assumed it was ok without testing it ;)

"Starter clicks without engaging?

YES:

1. Low battery - check brightness of headlights

2. Starter solenoid stuck/contacts dirty"

Hi Stuart.
Perhaps it could be made clearer in the faultfinder that a set of jump leads from another car will not necessarily bypass a dodgy battery on a Scorpio!   that`s where I went wrong! I`ll have to try changing the battery over next........... I`ll be sure to let you know how I get on! Thanks for your honesty and help Stuart.
