Title: How Bizarre
Post by Jonnycab on Jun 15th, 2009, 2:07am
I thought it was weird a while back when I had P/S fluid leaking through the middle & out of the contacts of the P/S pressure switch, but this beats that  ::)

I've had a bit of an oil leak from the rear crankshaft seal for a while now, but it's never been that much, but for the last few days there has been a really bad smell of burning engine oil coming through the air vents..

When I got home last night, the smell was the worsed it's ever been, so had a look under the car with the torch & couldn't believe what I saw....the whole O/S of the chassis was covered in oil, front to rear....it was even on the rear radius arm....& oil was dripping out badly from the rear of the sump  :(

"That's it" I thought....."the rear crankshaft seal has completely gone"  :(

Anyway, crawled under it this morning to see if by some miracle it may be something inexpensive, & guess what I saw ?....lots of oil all over the starter motor & side of the engine which seemed to be coming from the oil filter area  ???..."ah, loose oil filter" I thought, but no, it was still real tight  :-/

It wasn't until I switched the engine on & crawled back underneath that I discovered the cause of the leak......

Would anyone like to have a guess what it was ?....no prize I'm affraid....just a feeling of smugness  ;D

Faulty oil pressure switch?

That was what was wrong on my Mondeo and probably the reason the last owner sold it, as it leaked directly onto the exhaust and smelled of burning oil all the time.

Well done Den, permission to feel smug  ;)......

A split about half of an inch long on the side of the oil filter  :o....have you ever seen such a thing  ::)

I suppose all that oil on the chassis will stop it rusting  ;D

thanks jon...i have never seen it before myself, however i have seen rust oil filters where they have not been changed for years, and of course the rust eats through and the next thing is a oil leak throught the rusty filter...but im pleased for you in as much as it was only the oil filter :)..happy motoring mate.regards den. :).
