Title: Manual Gearbox Conversion
Post by GrumpyOne on Jun 18th, 2009, 6:42pm
Hi

What is the best flywheel, clutch and pressure plate etc to use on a 24V BOB engine converted to manual gearbox.
I am using a 4X4 bell housing and keeping the clutch as cable operated.

Cheers
Colin

Best combination is 2.8 cologne flywheel (lighter) coupled to a pinto cosworth clutch and pressure plate.

If you use the MT75 fly from a 2.9, you'll need to use the clutch from a cosworth escort

if you use the thiner-lighter flywheel from a 2.8 or 2.9 type 9 gear box on a mt75 gearbox converson you will have problems with the trust bearing .its to far from the fingers on the clutch.

It's a converted MT75 diesel gearbox that I am using, which flywheel etc would be best for it? And off of what model, there seams to be a lot of variations.

Sorry to be a pest ;D

OK, that makes sense, Flywheel, clutch kit etc off of a MK3 Granada, is that the 2.9 model?

Have a look here for the Viento

And thanks for your help.

Hi Colin

these pics may be of some help

This is my setup, Mt75 modded for hydraulic clutch, 2.9 flywheel, Escort cosworth clutch, ill take some measurements of the setup for you later

There is a slight mod you need to do with the gear box and starter, didnt know till i fitted that lot together this morning ::), the sierra bell housing is tapped for the starter to bolt to, as it the starter off the 24v so you'll need to drill out the thread on the box so you can pass a bolt through or use a sierra 4x4 starter

Matt :)

Using the 2.8 fly does involve a spacer modification to the thrust bearing  :-[ forgot about that :)

It is quite a bit lighter tho, so has advantages for acceleration :)

I think you could get round the bearing issue too if you went for a hydraulic release :)

Thanks everyone, most appreciated.
After speaking to Matt, I am going to use the 2.9 flywheel with an Escort Cosworth cable operated clutch.  I’ll keep you posted on progress.
;D ;D

You will need to grind down one of the webs on the sump so the clutch cable can pass behind the remote oil filter. Not a problem with a hydro clutch.
Its all a tight fit.
Escort or 4x4 saff cossie clutch is the one. I have the 2.9 flywheel. The 2.8 one needs to have the clutch arm piviot extended by about 10mm.

How are people getting around the gearbox electronics missing from the auto box? I run the BOB on a BOA ecu and loom as its in a sierra. But been asked to help fit a BOB ecu and loom to another car. Also theres the PATS to sort trying to fit it to the sierra too. ???

for the electrics im building a fooling box, theres only a few of the features you need to fool, 1st and 2nd gear, the anti stall (hardest to get round) and the pats are the main ones, relays and resistors will do the trick

if you know someone with a fds system and a few manuals you can have the auto box part of the ECU disabled

doing nothing isnt an option though, ecu will go into limp home mode

pats can be bypassed but thats being a bit naughty ;)

gase

the cost of my complete gear box including clutch and flywheel was about £600 but part of that was buying a complete 2.5 diesel scorpio! sierra box will be the hardest bit to get hold of now, quite a lot of people are doing 24v manual conversions

i paid about
£150 for the sierra box and flywheel
£200 for the diesel scorpio
£120 for the complete escort clutch from ford
£100 for another diesel box that turned out to be a mystery box (bought this first then bought the 2.5 after i found out it was an oddball)

and £30 to a mate for welding the front bellhousing to take the hydraulic thrustbearing

may cost more or less. just keep an eye on ebay/scrapyards

Hi

I am using a Megasquirt as the ECU and I don't have a problem with space (I hope).

My diesel box cost me £100 + £50 freight from RS Breakers.
Howieintheplace (on here) supplied the Sierra front end and done the conversion for £150 + £50 freight.
I don't have a flywheel, clutch or sandwich plate yet.

I am sending the box to Midland Transmissions for a complete new innards and quickshift at another £250 + freight.

Cheers
Colin

I am buying mine from http://www.extraefi.co.uk/ comes ready built with an initial map £315.

What about with the facelift scorpio and not v6, about the change? I rolled away in my mind with the idea that what if I convert my scorpio from automatic to  manual. What parts needs to be replaced. Is shaft different? My Scorpio model year is 1998. I am looking for getting more performance and economy.

if your looking to convert a 2.0 or 2.3 your best option is to get a mot failed manual car and just swap all the bits over, its far simpler then doin a v6 as they never came as manuals

performance wise if your car is a 2.3 then get hold of a 2.0 and fit the 2.0's head to the 2.3 block but would be best to uses the manual car's ecu as the map will be slightly different so in that sence stick to the same size engines

you should have a small fuel saving as you have and extra gear with the manual, to improve it further you can fit the 5th gear ratio from the turbo diesels to the petrol box but involves a fair bit of work

the very late built manual 2.3's had the same 5th gear ratio too
